In some states you can (legally) back onto the trailer.

Wait a second. It is illegal in some places to back your car onto a trailer? Thats been the way I've always put my car on my trailer (as shown in the pictures above). It gives a much nicer weight distribution on my trailer when the car is placed like that.

I added a "T" structure to the bottom of my trailer that is hinged at the top of the "T" to the trailer frame, just forward of the spring perch. The leg of the "T" leads forward under the existing hitch to a new hitch forward of the original. A ball is mounted on the T that lines up to the original hitch. This locks the trailer to the front of the "T". The whole set up allows my trailer to tilt. I have no issues at all loading my Spitfire which also has low ground clearance onto this trailer.

Another trick is to carry a pair of wheel ramps that you back the tow vehicle onto, By raising the hitch height, you lower the tail end of the trailer which lessens the angle of the "hump" making it easier to drive onto without scraping.
