I been looking at the plans, and everything is in metric. I live in USA, and I dont think my local supplier will supply me 25MM tubing, but 1". Would it better to just order online instead of resizing this all by .4mm?

.4mm is within the normal size variation of 1."

Thanks,

I just finished cleaned up, and going to start practicing with my welder.

Do you know how much I would need of 1" 16gauge?

I bought 240', but that includes enough for my build table, too! As I recall there was approximately the same amount needed for each part of the project, but then you're going to need some 3/4" square and round also.

What plans are you looking at? There are several variations of the frame dimensions in imperial measurement. See the following link:

The Champion book is in inches, the Gibbs book is in metric.

Unless metal is outrageously expensive, buy at least 50% more than you think you'll need. Besides having spare metal for the occasional mistake, it's useful for all sorts of things.

Building the Haynes (Gibbs) chassis with 1" tubing is straight forward you just need to pick a dimension that you are going to work against, like the outside dimensions. There are a few lengths that then get shortened appropriately.

Even if you decide to go for a version that is laid out in metric, it's a simple system to master. You can buy tape measures in metric increments at any hardware store. Also, there are tapes, rulers and machinists layout tools that have both systems on the same tool, Imperial and metric, so you can go back and forth using whichever is simpler for the situation.

The big thing to know is 25.4 mm = 1 inch exactly. You can use that to make many conversions for things like steel plate with simple arithmetic. For example , you see a lots of things in metric like use "2 plate", "4 plate", etc. They just mean 2 mm or 4 mm plate, and so on.

Keep a little $10 calculator handy and you can figure out what the nearest available Imperial dimension is as you go. However, it's smarter to do it ahead of time on the plans before starting.

You can do it! Good luck.

Tubing wall thickness is also critical, too thick and it will be overweight, too thin and it may break.

I've bought a couple of these https://www.amazon.com/Starrett-MS-2-Aluminum-Straight-Length/dp/B004RI53JE/?th=1 and a metric 9m tape.

Correction: I purchased the Starrett straight rules and a Lufkin 19mmx5m PHV1035 CM tape.
