Think I will workout the top steer first then move to the dressing of the casting.
Thanks for all the input.

Been playing with the steering arm that came with the spindles. Thinking of moving it up to the top holes and building some spacers to help clear the spindle upright ? What do you guys think ?
Will also use a bump steer stud for adjustment.

Since you are converting to a standard spherical, you might as well make your own arm with the tie rod in the right spot and double shear instead of adapting the iron arm. It would be easier to rework a fabbed brkt if you need bumpsteer correction, a ratio, or an ackerman change. You could also leave enough extra space between the flanges to shim the joint up or down a 1/2 inch to fine tune bumpsteer while still clearing the flanges at full susp travel and lock.

The bolt pattern looks symmetrical, so another option may be to bolt the calipers on the front to leave room for a flip of the iron arm for a top load tie rod (raising it roughly 3 inches) and rear steer rack for less weight. The rack would be closer to the steering wheel vertically and horizontally with a shorter intermediate shaft.

You can make spacers for the steering arm and they should have the same outside diameter as the face on the steering arm.

I'm using a copy of those spindles because I got them cheap last year. The underlying problem with these uprights is that you would like the steering axis closer to the hub face. An inch or more would be nice and I looked into changing the shape by adding a lot of weld metal to them.

I was struck by how close the ()* front upright was to what you see on some oval track setups, particularly the upper wishbone. Going forward keep in mind you can get both Pinto and Wide 5 axle pins for making welding uprights. The top can be a bolt on piece that serves as a steering arm and also a mount for a ball joint or pin for a bearing.

Is the upright in the pictures being used on that side of the rim on your car? That is a major scrub offset and that might be hard to manage at speed.

I was reading about 908's and see the appeal. Can you describe more about the frame you want to use or show a picture?

Placing 2nd at Sebring in a 908 makes you a legit real deal, I think.

Thanks for your input !

Working the scrub out now. Need to get some more parts to get some numbers. Then will play with my Auto-Ware program to find out where things need to be?
The upright has a angle of 79 Deg. And trying to use a 10"x 15" will take some work.
Would like 0 scrub ?

The 908-3 used front steer so that is what I will use.

Steve drove the 908 but not the 908-3.

Looks like I will try 14" x 15" with 295/50r15 on the rear and 10 x 15" with 225/50r15 front .
That will be a tire stretch of 1 3/4" for the rear (7/8" per side) and 9/16" for the front ( 7/64" per side).

Now I will start on what back spacing ? Think I will be using Diamond Wheels. Steel ,but they can make what I need. Or that is what I think.

Bassett wheels made me custom width/offset 15" steel wheels several years ago. You might ask them if they still do that. I also had http://www.custommetalspinning.com/Sear ... p?Cat=1477 make me a custom set of AL 3 pc wheels several yrs ago. Click on middle photo and you will see that they will make any bolt pattern, etc., you want. They are very nice wheels, and at the time they were very reasonable. Not sure if they still are, but worth looking into. The lighter AL wheels might be worth the extra cost on a lightweight car like yours.

BTW, I've seen two 908/3s up close several times. It is a great looking car, and I'm following your progress with great interest.

Jack

Been looking at the front suspension (photo's ) on the 908-3,and it must have had a lot of scrub.
Think their was a reason ?

Yo!
Bart Wheels make a pretty good variety of steel wheels. They have some they call light weight... By NASCAR standards, I guess they are. I've got Bart 15 dia X 14 wide on the rear of my car.

Thanks for the info on the wheels.

Been playing with the upright. To get the scrub as low as I can I will need to put the upright into the wheel as far as I can. And things are going to be very close !
Here is a 8 x 15 that I have and I turned it upside down. To use the deep off set. 5 3/5". Top joint is full Up.
Think I will be ok because this wheel is upside down and the inside shell has more clearance. Going to call Diamond Wheel a see what they think ?

That is quite close, wheels can bend more than you think. Also need to check caliper clearance. The wheel guys should have quite a bit of info for you tho, worth a call.

Sigh. Twice I've written you a long note in this thread today and then kicked the power cord off my laptop. I really wish I would stop doing that - so will make this a short note. I can give some pictures of the same parts with uniball bearings and weld up rings later.

It's a struggle to get the scrub down to 2".

Have settled on the wheel sizes.

10" x 15" front with 245/40r15 . May also get a set of 8" x 15" wheels ? :boxing:
12" x 15" rear with 295/50r15.

Got another setup table. 36 x 48. Plan is to build the front suspension on it ? Then move it to the chassis stand and move on to the rear.
The old table got new legs and the new one will also.
Cool.
