I'm not sure how far you are from Hollister, Mo, but Menard's has 6" 20ga studs https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/metal-framing/prostud-reg-6-20-gauge-drywall-interior-metal-stud/pste-6x12/p-1444426600804.htm. I also found the same studs on the Home Depot web site. You might also look at Lowes.

@TRX

It worked, but I would suggest doing a simpler table like jinca just above did with the red one.

That said, I did mine in that way because: 1) I wanted a warm-up project using tube steel before starting on my chassis; and 2) I wanted to hold the whole car including running gear on the table. So, it's more complex than it should be. I ended up having to shim the plywood, so it would be level.

If you want to have the engine and transmission plus the suspension in place as you build, you'll have to give considerable thought to the bracing and cross-bracing. Also, the castors should be heavier than jinca's too, and mounted on flat flanges at the base of the legs.

Cheers,

Damn! That front slip angle is way too large and the Ackerman is just a muddle.

I like this one. Could be locost except for the aluminum slab.

A full day there and back.

Yep. Neither will deliver less than a bundle of 180 to my local stores.

After thinking about it for a while, I guess I'll go with regular 2x6s, keep an eye on warpage, and just shim the work area as necessary. [sigh]

One advantage of using a mouse motor the complete dressed driveline weighs around 200 pounds. I'll just put the back sawhorse under the engine and it should be fine.

Hey, at least I'm using the big 1000cc engine and not the wimpy 660cc engine that Caterham puts in the 160...

TRX,

Most guys that install gyprock/sheetrock (whatever you call it in your locale) or do commercial or office construction jobs will likely have some 2 x 6 steel stud material sitting around (extras and cut-offs). The contractor may have 2x8 material too and in thicker gauges if they do warehouse work. Try talking to some contractors locally and see if you can buy the small amount of material that you'll need for your table. Good luck,

Bill

What ever table you decide moving around it is a must, My first set up table was 4'x8' and one side was against the garage wall (not smart) now I have plenty of room and can sit and work around it, next move will be just blocking up the wheels so I can work under it more easily...
