If by 1.8L you mean the 2.0L MZR in the NC Miata, then yes. If by 1.8L you mean the 1.6L/1.8L BP in the NA/NB Miata, then no. Unfortunately, it sounds like the 2.0L Skyactiv in the ND may not have kept the MZR bellhousing pattern like the Ecoboost engines appear to have done.

Thanks you for the correction I believe you are spot on.The car in the photo was to my spec using the 2.0 L ecoboost with adapter to Tremec T5.
MNR did inform me that the engine does mate right up to Miata. But now checking notes looks like mx5 mk3 so this would be NC, not NB.

Also would this same combo NC Miata box should mate to the 2.0 liter Duratec type L also?

As a casual observer, it seems to me that Ford changes their bell housing patterns as often as some women change their minds. The Ford factory guys I talked to a few years ago couldn't understand why I would resist buying a $400 custom bell housing for their new 3- and 4-cylinder crate motors.

Over at GM, it seems to me that the list of compatible motor/bell combos was a lot longer.

I too think the 2.0 L Ford Ecoboost would be an excellent choice for the Locost or kit build and should be seriously considered. The engine as used in the 2012 and newer Focus ST is rated at 252 HP and 270 Ft lb. would be a good candidate for our cars.
I have checked my local salvage yards and it is not difficult to purchase complete engine with turbo under 60 K miles for $1,500. To me this makes it a very economical option for the kit. To this price you would also need to purchase and transplant the Focus ECU( always easier typed than done) or possible use aftermarket for off road use. Also you will need the fly by wire throttle pedal and harness. I am rather certain this engine can be paired directly to the Miata 1.8L transmission and drivetrain, readily available, or thus can be an upgrade to an existing 1.8L Miata based car. One issue that will need to be worked out is these engines use a pedal fly by wire system. The throttle and pedal box will need to be designed or modified to accept Ford throttle pedal. Ford racing does sell such a pedal or you can probably adapt the Ford Focus pedal. The Ford pedal is a pendulum style pedal. This torque level is at the maximum what most of the Miata Turbo group owners say the Miata Trans can handle. Another option would be to mate this engine up to a Tremec T5 using a special cast adapter. Also the Tremec is a readily available , inexpensive and light weight and very strong option, actually not much more than the Miata box. I actually have had MNR mock this combo up, 2.0 L ecoboost and Tremec T5 for fitment and jig and do offer this as an available option for purchase for the VortX. FYI I did check the 2.3L and as I recall the 2.0L and 2.3 share the same block and bolt pattern. So all above comments should be similar for the 2.3 but mostly likely more torque than the Miata box could handle for long life. T5 would be better option.
But I have not any personal experience with the 2.3L ecoboost.

I have been considering building a Stalker MX-5 using the Ford Duratec 2.0 litre turbo. ebay Motors lists pages of them ranging from around $800 to $1500, many with relatively low (under 50000 miles), some with free shipping. The Stalker MX-5 is meant to use an NA or NB Miata as a donor. I would probably use the transmission out of an NC Miata since it mates with the Duratec without need for adapters. Brunton have the drive shafts made up for each kit so it should not be a problem. I still have to talk to them about what differential (and other parts) I should be purchasing. Like geek49203, I will probably go with a taller gear ratio in the differential since I find having to run around 3200 rpm or 2700 rpm at 60 mph (a friend let me try his Caterhams) does not make for an enjoyable experience when driving longer distances.

As part of my research into using the EcoBoost Duratec 2.0 l turbo, I found two 2013 Focus ST's at a local Ford dealership and took one out for a vigorous test drive (thrash). I found the power delivery quite linear with no noticeable lag or kick unlike in other turbo'd cars I have driven. I suspect that the turbos are fairly small and have been set up to spool up at fairly low rpms. Considering that I am aiming at a road car and the 2.0 l turbo puts out significantly more power and torque than my friends Caterham (that is already a handful), I will probably run it in stock form. The difference in weight between the 2.0 l turbo Duratec and the NA Duratec in my friend's Caterham R300 consists mainly of the turbo, intercooler and associated plumbing. This is probably in the range of the difference in the weights of the various drivers on this forum which gives me some incentive to work out at the gym a bit more. If one is patient, one can find some really low mileage ones, some in the 10000-20000 mile range, for about the same money as the higher mileage ones. It must have been heart breaking for the former owners of those vehicles

A former coworker has agreed to let me take detailed measurements of the engine in his Focus ST so I would have better information when I talk to Brunton. I will share that info when I get it.

Ford racing also sells a north-south kit for the focus st engine... it actually just looks like a lot of the parts from the mustang ecoboost: https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-6006-20

And at 299.00, that's cheap!

Do they have a bell or a production RWD trans that bolts up to that then?

You know geek, that's a very good question. I always thought the 2.3 was just a stroked 2.0 but they may have gone with a different block pattern at the flywheel end. in which case you couldn't use the Getrag 6 speed out of the Ecoboost Mustang.

Cause I don't want to drop an extra $500 on a custom bell.

That looks like the deal of the century, IF there's also an easy transmission, clutch solution as well.

I have been very seriously considering the Ecoboost 2.0 swap for my locsot build for some time now.
Image
Some of the hard work has been done with this swap. First the 2.0 ecoboost bolts up to a NC miata transmission. The internet says the 6 speed are stronger than the 5 speeds. Go and get a NC miata flywheel and clutch.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture ... e-part-xi/

That's that, then you can buy a NC miata oilpan, while you are at it get the counter-balance shaft delete kit.
http://www.full-race.com/store/ecoboost ... lug-1.html

Engine Management, I have only found two easy solutions for the 2.0.

Ford (Ford ECU and wiring harness designed for custom built vehicles. Not a true standalone....you can flash it, like other ford ECU's) Seems like a great deal.
https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-6017-20T
Image
Specialist Components-Engineering Solutions (a true standalone)
http://twinkam.co.uk/epages/191f6b26-60 ... ucts/SC356
Image
Cost estimate
Ecoboost engine with turbo $1000-2500 (really depends on the mileage make and model. Focus ST cost more than the other ecoboost engines)
ECU and Wiring $1600-1900.00
NC Miata transmission $300-500
Flywheel with Clutch $550.00
balance Shaft Delete kit $30.00

Total $3480-5480.00

Gotta ask yourself is this very locost? Then start looking at 2.5 MZR engine for $300 that also mate the NC miata transmission and can make 200whp NA. Dam decisions dam.

what's the reasoning behind the nc oil pan? the 2.0 st oil pan is already angled in the right direction. any oil starvation issues could be taken care of will a good baffle I would think. the NS kit gets a new oil pan too but perhaps just for anticipated steering rack clearance?
I'm also wondering cause I was planning on using an stock st oil pan in my 2.0 TI-VCT.

And here's another build using an Ecoboost.

"Basically mk3 mx5 5 speed box bolts straight up using mk3 mx5 flywheel, clutch, and starter. I've gone for a competition clutch stage 2.

I'm using the Ford racing controls pack which comes with ecu, harness, uego sensor, fly by wire pedal, fuse and relay box and a few other bits. Ready mapped out of the box with an 80lbft increase in torque over the standard map. Whispers are this will be come tunable in the near future.

Engine weight is around the 140kgs with flywheel and all ancillaries and turbo.

Engines are cheap. I got a 2014 engine with less than 10k on it for around 1700 and I sold the dmf, clutch, starter and ac compressor.

Sump wise I'm hoping to get away with standard as I'm using a scooped bonnet. If using a shorter sump there will be mods needed as I'm pretty sure there's a balancer shaft in there. I'd imagine the sumps will be same bolt pattern as the durance."
