Hi everyone, when I am ready, i will be starting a build log. I have been overly obsessing about the real possibility and reading build logs has given me the reality of length of time building one of these cars will take. Hence my transmission question, I have heard in the past that a transmission laying around not being used will dryout, or will have a greater chance of failure. I don't know why, so i thought I would throw it out here for feedback. A good donor car is something that will require patience to look for and I have narrowed down to a few but want to know about storage. Thanks.

I have never heard that. The concern for me would be more about moisture content in the fluid. I would store it dry, with any seals/potential contaminant entrances covered. like the output shaft on a T5 for example.

Store your stuff high and dry.

Not out in the yard with a tarp over it!

Auto trans can be messy if left full.

Good to have a driveshaft or axle stubs inserted to keep them dry and clean.

You can tarp them, just not with a water proof tarp like plastic or oiled canvas. It needs to have air moving through it or moisture will condense on the inside of the tarp. Plain old canvas or painters ground cloths work well.

Slap some grease on all recently exposed splined shafts and not only will they not rust but it protects the seal from drying out also.

My engine/trans sat for over a year. I turned the engine manually from the crank every couple of months just to keep it moving. I plugged all the holes with paper towels (they absorb moisture) and left it in the garage, runs fine now but one of the injectors went bad. I would recommend having the injectors cleaned or replaced as well as spark plugs and all fluids if the engine sits for a while. While its out the car check the clutch and if you want a lighter flywheel do it before the engine is installed.

An automatic having issues with seals and o rings drying out can happen, it would effect the apply pistons and such but on a manual, I wouldn't worry about it.
You can easily change the rear seal if you want which is the one I've seen fail most often anyways (manual and automatic) due to driveshaft vibration.
If you wanted to be real retentive about it you could spray down the cylinders with oil then bag it and flood the bag with nitrogen...........
