Post subject:  Small Ring gear to use in a electric revers setup ?

Looking for a starter ring gear that is 4" to 5" max diameter for a electric revers system. Could be from a electric start ATV,UTV,motorcycle, lawn tractor,or ant thing. Any ideas where to look ?
Thanks, Randy

I maybe looking for a gear that is too small ? 5" or less ?

Trying to get back on the Lotus 11/15 project.

B85, Try going to a small engine repair shop and see what they've got available in their scrap heap from a Briggs and Stratton or Tecumseh engine that was electric start. You could probably get the matching starter/drive gear for next to nothing too.

I've spent some time looking into this and the starter motors and ring gears for some small tractors (John Deere, Cub Cadet, etc.) look promising. I think they may be a bit larger in diameter than what you're looking for however.

Thanks, Rod.
The diameter is about 7 1/4" and it was off a 1976 Skidoo. A purely lucky find off Ebay.
Randy,
I think one of the things to consider is the relationship between the Bendix and the ring gear. Once I found the gear, which was only about $ 40, I did some cross checking, and I found out that the Skidoo Bendix was nearly identical to the SBC starter motor that I found. I can give you some more exact specs if you need them.
From a a practical experience, I think that you will find a small engine gear and starter motor to be under powered. My gear is 7 1/4" in diameter and the starter motor is rated at 3.5 hp, and it takes that much to move the car.

Martin, your famous I say you on YouTube.

Any all all info would help.PM or post is good. I have been looking at your build and think I can make it fit ? The 7 1/4 is going to be the hard part. Hope I can get something from the guys in the UK but we will see ?

Is you starter a gear reduction ? Also have been thinking about some kind of soft start system ? Here is the space I'm working with.

Randy,
this is the starter that I used; it is 3 hp not 3.5, so no burgers for lunch, before backing up.

The bendix gear is 1.165" OD, and 9 teeth.
Here is a good candidate for a ring gear. Don't know the diameter, but it looks about right. Check with the vendor. The center can be machined off, and a mounting plate made to be sandwiched between the flange and the u-joint.

I had thought about a soft start, but couldn't find something suitable. Don't know if that would make it more user friendly; it is not the most elegant drive system to begin with, however, it works just fine as it is. My daughters would rather that I don't back up; it sounds too embarrassing, Dad :BH:
I find, that with the roll cage, it is just as easy to push the car back. I only use the reverse when I'm already strapped in or in an emergency.
