An overflow tank is nothing more than a catch can with a hose in the bottom and open to the atmosphere.

An expansion tank or header tank is pressurized with the coolant system.

In Nick's pic, the moroso label is on an expansion tank but there is an overflow tank right in front of it.

The fittings at the base of each radiator cap would tee into the overflow/catch can.

I don't know what you mean by mixing manifold. If you are talking about reversing coolant flow through the head, many have done so. Just bear in mind the system as designed works great and may be no better reversed, despite the claims.

The mix manifold is just a Miata term used for the housing that comes off the water pump - it has a small line for the T to the throttle body stuff, the 5/8" heater hose and the main line to the rad.

It's all making sense now...

I have a 13-lb. cap on the header tank, a 22-lb. on the radiator. The area around the radiator filler is dusty. I don't think it's ever seeped coolant. The header tank, OTOH, can fill the overflow bottle on hot days, but sucks it right back up when it cools down.

I race Miatas in SCCA. We just connect the two hoses that go to the heater core and bypass the core. It's really that simple. Works for a racecar running at Daytona for 90 minute endurance races.
