So lets say I want a modern transmission, what options are there.

1. Sequential trans: expensive Sadev is probably the cheapest option, still about $7k.
2. DSG: BMW option, cheaper to buy, but physically larger, might fit in a 442.
3. The Getrag 7 speed automatic, not a real DSG/Sequential, but an option, fast shifting, paddle shifter option, can take a lot of power.
4. Anything else?

Even NASCAR have sequential trans these days, maybe that will lead the way to other cheaper options. None of there are exactly Low cost options, but lets not whine about the cast. You gotta pay to play:)

This, https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/this-mazda-transaxle-patent-could-mean-a-very-different-next-gen-miata/ar-AAUQQbU, is not available yet, but might be an interesting addition to your list.

Walt, thanks for the input, that does look interesting. Looks like a motorcycle trans with the drum shift setup.

OK, if it's not a low cost then I would go for a dog box sequential conversion, these guys have some good options.

Would love a set of these in my TR6070;

That is a little spendy!! There are lot lot of mega expensive option, but I for one do not want a transmission that costs more them the entire car cost to build.

Graham, I am by no means anything close to being an expert. What is your end goal? It sounds like it might be to reduce the time it takes to shift. Have you thought about a toroidal CVT?

Chuck, it does not sound like fun droning around like a snow mobile. What RWD CVT are you thinking about?

Sorry to say I don't have any suggestions. I was spit-balling. I saw some Nissan papers a few years back on a high torque CVT. Whether they went into production or not, I don't know.

Which sequential transmission does Caterham use it it's cars? I don't know about inexpensive (I doubt it is), but it should be about the right size.

Cheers,

Caterham used to make there own sequential but I believe they are no longer available. Quaife make a box but it's very expensive, the Sadev is a popular choice.

BMW sequential is less than 1k and controllers are probably 1k.

The new Nascar trans is a transaxle not a front mounted transmission. That is interesting, makes it easier to implement into a 7 chassis. Cost will be an issue in the short term.
