Doing a lot of research and wondered if anyone has ever used a Subaru FA20 boxer engine? My thought is that it may not fit.

I've never seen it done before, most likely for the reason that you already mentioned. Even if you could make it fit, there's a good chance that the valve covers would be sticking out the sides of the car, and not leave room to connect the steering column to the steering rack. Also, assuming that you want rear wheel drive only, you'd need to modify the inside of the transmission so that the side output shafts that normally power the front wheels are bypassed. Or you would need a custom adapter to mate the Subaru engine to a conventional front engine, rear drive transmission.

I suppose you could maybe make it work in a middy/rear engine application, then you wouldn't have to try to source a BRZ drivetrain to not have to deal with the AWD parts.

There are VW to Subie adaptors, so other transmissions could be made to work too. Don't forget the VW boxer-engine Locost build that was mated to a Porsche transaxle. And yet, his valve covers did stick into the breeze as I recall.
