Heavier, yes, but than again bike engine are a bit like hanging around a 10-yr old with ADD who's strung out on Monster drinks. As long as you don't mind frantic, you'll be happy. A bike engine's great for the track... not so sure about the street.

I`m ok with frantic, prefer it actually. Not many car engines(and none that are locost friendly) produce the kind of quick revving, high rpm sounds the bike engine does.

Mine will never see the street, thats what my open class sportbike is for. :)

I'm just saying, having a sportbike engine in a street car is kind of like dating a supermodel. We all say we want to, but when it really comes right down to it, the "overhead" is a bit much for many people, and I include myself.

OTOH, for track use it's awesome... the engine I mean.

I realize that this topic is called "Summary of engine weights" but here is my Ford Type E 4-speed transmission (sometimes called a Rocket, or a Ford Of Germany FOG, and is the four speed version of the Type 9 found the Merkur XR4Ti) .
Image
Notice the small shifter still attached and its probably low on oil by about a pint and it weighs about 58 pounds.

I just weighed the complete engine (4age) and trans from a 1989 Toyota MR2 with oil for a total of 395 lbs. That included the alt and starter. The stock cast iron ex manifold was on the engine but separately weighed 17 lbs. The trans by itself weighed 91 lbs.

Just found a great resource and thought I would post it.

Engine Weight and Size

FYI version 00.02.04
by Dave Williams, dave.williams@chaos.lrk.ar.us

It isn't really a Frequently Asked Question, so I'll call it an
"FYI", For Your Information. This was originally a list I'd compiled
long ago on paper, then moved to the computer, then posted on the net
as a response to some questions. It wound up being popular, but since
I didn't keep track of the origin of the data there was some debate as
to how accurate the list was. This new improved list has origins
where I could find references; what doesn't have an origin is stuff
from my original list.

You'll sometimes see more than one weight listed. Some weights are
for just a long block, some are complete and ready to run, and of
course everything in between. Some engines varied in weight during
their production runs - for example, some later Chevy V8s use thinwall
blocks and aluminum heads.

As of version 94.06.01 engine dimensions have been added. Since the
shape can vary quite a bit within the maximum limits this data isn't
very useful, but many people have requested it.

As of version 00.02.04 transmission weights have been added.

If you have any figures you'd like to contribute, please send them to
me at one of the following addresses:

dave.williams@chaos.lrk.ar.us
PO Box 181, Jacksonville AR 72078-0181

All contributions will be fully credited.

Just found this on the S2000 engine. This seems to jibe with what Brian @ Ultralite found too. He had a complete Miata assembly and a complete S2000 assembly and found out the S2000 was lighter than the Miata by 50#.

"Since I have them both out (04) and attached together still I put my engine and tranny on my Long Acre scales to see what they weighed. Engine had no water or oil, but tranny still had fluid in it.

I put 1 scale under the oil pan and the other under the tranny mount (back of tranny)

Total Weight was 400lbs, 273lbs on the front scale and 127lbs on the back one (under tranny mount)

weight does include hoses and wire harness.

no ac compressor or exhaust header tho"

Is that the weight of the Honda or the Mazda? And i assume it's a 1.8l Mazda?

I have a 1.6l Mazda B6, if anyone has the specs on that, it would be nice. But i can probably get a good ballpark on the figure quoted above.

Yesterday I picked up a Zetec for only $260 and they even hoisted it into my truck bed for me. It had an assortment of aluminum brackets still attached along with the stock exhaust header, intake tract with the throttle body, coil pack, automatic flywheel and water pump. It didn't have any accessories, though. Daniel (nocones) and I set it on a couple of bathroom scales and it weighed 255 lbs. It probably still has oil in it and maybe some coolant.
