After a year and a half and 11,000 miles, I finally got enough confidence in the car to take it out to a Golden Gate Lotus Club autocross. I thought I knew something about how the car handled at the limit, but I was mistaken. After half a dozen spins on the first run, I learned that the only time it's necessary to turn the wheel is when you first enter a turn. Once the car starts to rotate, you can (i.e. should) immediately return the wheel to center and steer the rest of the way around the turn with the throttle.

As it happens, I wasn't very good at this technique, but it was fun trying and I eventually got it right most of the time. I always thought the car cornered pretty flat, but the photos show some noticable roll in the turns. I guess it's time for sway bars. And tires. And about 80 more horsepower. Luckily I was the only one in the Open Seven class, so I was still able to pick up some much-needed first-place points.

Worry about the extra horse power last.

You're looking pretty good out there for the first time out. But you're right about the roll. Was that autocross at Marina or Crows Landing?

Congrats, your car looks good out there. I remember my first autocross, it was a very humbling experience. I was young and thought I was hot stuff and was going to show everyone how it was done. When I was stopping at the end of my first run, I stopped harder than ever before, 30 feet shy of the stop box. I had to put it back in gear to break the light beam and stop the clock. My face literally hurt for a week from smiling so much and I was hooked.

A few years later, some young punk with the same attitude showed up at another autocross with a Porsche 928. I was driving a borrowed, clapped out, stock Nissan Micra on pizza cutter tires and beat him by something like 15 seconds. Point is, seat time and practice is more important than a faster car, although a faster car is a lot of fun. Sticky tires are also nice.

AutoX is fun, but it's also much more difficult that it looks. It takes a lot of skill and a good car setup to be quick. At the local Miata club a very stock Fiat X19 is always in the running for the fastest time of the day.Getting the car to rotate around the cone is the art, tougher than it looks. I am a track day guy and find AutoX dull after a while, but they are great cheap test sessions, I have worked out a lot of bugs on a $30 AutoX rather than a $250 track day. It took three AutoX to fully solve my fuel starvation problem.

Hey, Nick, your car sure looks good in action, though. How about some video next time?

Cheers,

Great job, I was hooked after my first Autocross about 5 years ago. I have been doing 10-20 events per year since. +1 on the video. Either hook up your cell phone or get a GoPro.

for video hit up craigslist and the occasional yard sale. You'll find some NICE point and shoot cameras for10-15 bucks since every phone has a high end camera built in

I got an Olympus tough 850 a while back for $10
