After a year and a half and 11,000 miles, I finally got enough confidence in the car to take it out to a Golden Gate Lotus Club autocross. I thought I knew something about how the car handled at the limit, but I was mistaken. After half a dozen spins on the first run, I learned that the only time it's necessary to turn the wheel is when you first enter a turn. Once the car starts to rotate, you can (i.e. should) immediately return the wheel to center and steer the rest of the way around the turn with the throttle.
As it happens, I wasn't very good at this technique, but it was fun trying and I eventually got it right most of the time. I always thought the car cornered pretty flat, but the photos show some noticable roll in the turns. I guess it's time for sway bars. And tires. And about 80 more horsepower. Luckily I was the only one in the Open Seven class, so I was still able to pick up some much-needed first-place points.
