This is a placeholder. Please reply with links to relevant threads and I'll consolidate.

This link is from the Rangerstation site, it should answer most questions about the Ranger axles used. At the bottom of the page are the width differences between certain Explorers and Rangers

I have some details on the Volvo 940 axle that I am using here: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=4121

Quote:
Two weeks ago, I finally bought an axle:

It's from a 1993 Volvo 940.
Specs:
59" (approximate) from WMS to WMS
5x108 bolt pattern
integrated drum emergency brake
Solid rear disc brakes, with (very small) dual piston calipers.
Input is offset just a hair under an inch to the passenger side.

Weight: All up, 175lbs including brakes, fluid, everything. Calipers weigh in around 37 lbs (so axle without disc brakes (but including drum components) and fluid is about 137lbs)

It's a Posi (a locker actually that only locks up to 25mph, but there is a way to make it engage at faster speeds), 4.10 gears. Apparently it's very closely related to a Dana 30 axle, so other LSD units are pretty readily available.

Cost: $200 from a junkyard.

I used Hyundai Pony axle. Same as a MkII Ford Cortina and almost the same as a Ford Escort as used in the Champion book. Was roughly 120lbs complete drum to drum with the factory brackets and full of gear oil. 48" from backplate to backplate. Drum brakes. Mine is a 3.89:1 ratio but a few others were available. Offset by 1" to passenger side. Bolt pattern is 4x108mm.

10 bolt 7.5 axle out of a 1984 Chevy S10 2wd pickup. Approximately 52 1/4" from WMS <-> WMS. Centered pinion and 5x4.75 bolt pattern (5x120.7mm). 26 spline axle c-clip axle shafts. Uses a large flange style yoke which may be too large for the transmission tunnel. Better bet is to replace it with a CV style yoke for more clearance.

Good match for Mustang II spindles / rotor setup which are available in 4.75 bolt pattern.
