Interesting engine choices by lotus/caterham. I'd personally love to get my hands on a cosworth tuned motor. |

The early 90s duratec 2.5L v6 seems like the best compromise as far as weight, rpm range, power level, fit, and cost. I think any sohc or dohc with a short stroke would be fun. Here is the fwd j-body engine that was also used in the seven. This appears to be a 1990 turbo sunbird but still the standard engine for these cars. The seven version was a 1.6 instead of a 2.0L; probably a shorter stroke. The bellhousing pattern is the same as the v6-60. |

Couple of issues : Lotus was ALWAYS optimistic about the power outputs of it's engines.. often by 25% ! Having said that, 100 'real' hp in a 7 is a Seriously Fun amount of power. A nice balance between handling and acceleration ..where one needs a small bit of practice and ultimately Skill (a 4 letter word !) to get the car quickly around a track. Big power is odd at best and one can easily find that already available in a myriad of new/used cars, why go to all this trouble just to build a point and squirt car ? |
