Hey guys-

Getting ready to install a Painless harness in my project and I'm collecting the odd bits I know I'll need.. years ago I installed a Painless harness in my street rod, and it went in really nicely, even for me (in this life I've learned I'm intimidated and mocked by anything math or electrical :) ).

This time around I have a few tiny LED wires here and there that will be integrated.. no worries soldering them to a larger wire of course, but my question comes from when you have a crimp/fitting on the end of an LED wire, say it needs to be grounded.. Do they make special tiny little small-gauge lugs for these tiny LED wires? I'm used to dealing with 16-18 gauge wires and fittings, and those 'large' fittings seem totally wrong to try and crimp down on an LED wire..

I guess what I'm asking is where to I get lugs/end bits for LED sized wires?

thanks-

ccrunner

I've never seen ring-connectors for smaller than 22ga. I assume they are just to rough for smaller wires since any repeat handling will break them.. If you absolutely need a ring connector, I would just make a loop in the wire and solder it solid, or solder to a washer etc.

I have, on occasion, used a larger pieces of bare stranded wire, inserted along with the smaller wire and crimp them together. This fills the barrel. The bare wire should only be about 0.1" long, just long enough to fill the metal crimp area of the lug. Ensure that bare wire extend out the back of the insulated sleeve on the ring terminal. However, if it is for a ground wire, then generally, no harm done if you do. It would just be "Poor form, ol' chap".

Although I have not done this, you could leave a bit of the 2nd added wire (insulated end) extend beyond the barrel, say 1/2 to 1" and heat-shrink over the 2 wires to add some strain relief to the finer LED wire.

In other instances, I have simply doubled the stripped end back on itself and crimped the doubled wire. This effectively increases the wire gauge 3 sizes.

This is the correct way to do it - need to fill the crimp.

I posted a more detailed description a few years ago how to size it - viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13605&p=150758&hilit=Circular+area+unit#p150758
