So i bought a HF winch that I plan to mount to my new trailer but I'm not sure what battery would work well. Any thoughs? The manual just mentioned a 12v 12ah battery min but will that be enough to pull my 1200lb car onto the trailer?

Here is the manual

Can you not use the battery in your tow car? What is the amp draw of the winch?

I would have to run cables from the battery in the truck all the way back to the trailer. Since I rarely use it I would prefer not to do that.

At 2500lbs the draw is 132amps. My car would draw closer to 55amps at 1200lbs.

So yes I would need a bigger battery... but that is 12a per hour and the winch would only draw for a few min.... So I'm not quite sure what's best

I have the same winch, its a beast. Towing your car up the ramp won't take much. I use a pretty big 29 series battery off my camper. If you have a 7 plug wire on your tow vehicle, could supplement a smaller battery.

That's the plan. I got a 12v 18ah that I will wire up to the charge output on the 7pin. It might charge pretty slow but that's ok. I also plan on hook up a battery disconnect switch between the winch and battery. Should be good.

But the first thing I will do is see how many times I can pull the car up and lower it down until the battery doesn't like it anymore.

Supervises the load

I had some comments about much smaller size batteries, shows what I know about trailer wenches. 150 amps, OMG...

I wouldn't connect it to your car electric system. You might get pretty big current flows, for instance when you try to start your tow vehicle and this second battery tries to step up and share the starter motor load. You'll melt a wire or connector or blow a fuse. You could be looking at something like a hundred amps or more. Plus if it needs to be charged you could also look at big currents, like 55 amps....

On a 7 pin, the aux output is specifically designed to maintain a battery so that isn't likely. It also wont charge until the truck is started and I'm pretty sure the trailer battery cannot draw from the main battery. There is also a 50amp breaker inline from the winch and the 7 pin has it's own fuse.

I think the alternator has a relay that is controlled by the ecu for all of this.
