Also posted this in my build log. I'm repeating myself because I do that... And, in case somebody might see it here and not there or vicey-versey.

I have a question or three for all you Miata-wise folk:

Will the serpentine alternator pulley from a second generation (or third or fourth or etc) fit on a first generation Miata alternator?
(The first gen version has a v-belt pulley.)

Is the serpentine pulley a 6-groove piece, or sumpin else?

Anybody got one lyin' around that you're not using and would part with without too much weeping and lamentation?

That is all. You may now resume your regularly scheduled activities.

The NA 1.6 L alternator is a 15 mm shaft. The 1.8s are 17 mm and the pulley has 4 grooves.

Hi Ron- Thanks for the info. Sorry I was so slow getting back to you, been having trouble posting stuff in here.

I think I've found the pulley I need to fit that 15 mm shaft and go with the 6-groove design the other pulleys have. It was used on some early 90's Ford Escorts as well as Toyotas, Mitsu's and so forth. I'll let you know when the package arrives if it was the right one.

Thanks for the info, Sir!

If that pulley does not work out for you I would try https://www.aspwholesale.com/ The website is a pain to look non standard applications on, but they have a ton of pulleys with drawings and specs. I found two that i thought would work a couple of years ago and ordered both. The first one fit prefect so I never tried the other one.

I would bet that any alternator/starter rebuilder in your area would be able to tell you the part you need and probably have it on the shelf. Maybe on a core unit. Take your parts and see what they can do for you. And take pictures along for "drag and brag" aka Show-and-Tell.

Hi Chuck! You know, that sounded like a really good idea when you said it. Plus, a couple of my buddies here had mentioned that same idea, as in, "Go to Jerry's Auto Electric, he'll have that pulley."

Well, in a word, no... Guy looked at the two pulleys, checked the size of the bore on the Miata pulley (15mm) and said, "We don't have anything like that here. All of the stuff we deal with is bigger than that." I was sooooo let down...

Guess I'm waiting on USPS to deliver the one I ordered. We'll hope it fits. Stay tuned...

Maybe you should have tried Billy Bob's place, 'nuther 1/2 mile down the paved road. I guess if it isn't for 'mericun iron, like a Cheby or a Ford ...... I'll leave it at that. Sorry.
