Has anyone done any sort of security measures on their car aside from the normal cutoff switch?

None yet but I would love a proximity alarm for the interior. Also the best security we have in these cars is a manual transmission. Not too many bad boys know how to drive one. Russ

I used a motorcycle alarm system on a previous open car build. Proximity sensor was located under the driver's seat. You couldn't reach in and touch the steering wheel without the alarm going off and the lights flashing.

Removable steering wheel also works as a deterrent, but the steering wheel can get stolen :BH:

I have a basic alarm system with a proximity sensor. Neither one was particularly expensive.

I've seen where some Caterhams have a removable steering wheel, and the cars come with a small carrying case that allows you to take the wheel with you!

I agree with what Tom said about removable steering wheels, I had one stolen from my car while shopping. I was lucky, I ran into my wife at the store and got a ride home to get my other steering wheel.

Seattletom, what alarm did you use? I never thought about a motorcycle one. Russ

What came to mind was removable steering wheel. I am not sure what to think of it though. I have seen one on the video of a full body locost called Capulet. I seems rather a radical solution and when I saw it I had conflicting opinions. Any how these are available and if I was concerned (which I am not for now) , that's what I would do:

Hmmm...The proximity sensor motorcycle alarm is intriguing, although might kill some of the 'vintage' vibe. I had just planned on a locking storage cubby for the removable steering wheel and all of the major electricals being individually switched in a unique (not all the same direction for on) pattern, with possibly one necessary button/switch being in a non-obvious location.

Check out Sevenesqueron's build, he put in a proximity sensor.

Don't go too far down the rabbit hole on this issue.

All you need is enough security to discourage opportunists.

Someone seriously having nefarious goals for your car will be much harder to discourage.

What ever you do make it easy to work on so any needed diagnosis can be done without total disassembly of the car.

I would like to come up with a simple proximity key fob system to close the relay I have in line with my push button start. I have no key and only the push button start. If I walk away the push button start wont work but if I am in range it would. I could leave it in the car when security isnt an issue. I have found full alarm systems with proximity key fob but they are $300+. I do have the removable steering wheel that gets locked to the frame with a cable lock.

i have the original ford p.a.t.s. system and even i couldn't get round it, there is no way to by pass it other than installing a different pcm but then you would have to cut a key to the column and code it to the new pcm.

my steering wheel is also removable and i can lock it in the trunk.

just about the only way to steal it is a trailer or flat bed and to combat that happening i turn the steering slightly before i remove the key which locks the steering in the turned position.

i can also lock any loose items in the trunk.

if you had none of these features perhaps you could make some sort of hand brake lock that locks the hand brake in the on position with a pad lock

[edit] deleted an error. [edit]

Well hidden cut-off switch, and removable steering wheel (with a means to lock steering wheel somewhere) should be plenty to keep the thieves away. Anyone more determined will just drag it onto a trailer/truck and be gone.
