Post subject:  Which horn to buy/install?

While attaching various items to the front of the chassis it occurred to me that a horn(s) will need to be fitted. Not using a donor and with so many aftermarket and junkyard options out there, I find myself on the horns of a dilemma (as JD might say.)

So what are other builders using/recommending to sound the alarm?

Tom, I believe you to be a gentleman, Therefore your horn shall announce "excuse me sir, but you seem to be impeding my progress"

I can recommend the Wolo Bad Boy Air Horn. I used one on my build. It is small, easy to install and is available at HF ( Hint: use the 20% coupons). If you decide to use a generic universal horn, definitely get the high/low pair. They seem to get attention better than using a single horn, other than the Wolo of course.

There's an interesting junkyard route.

Cadillacs and Buicks had an optional train horn. It's a set of four horns that produce the traditional train sound. I think it was just called a "four note horn" officially.

Most people don't know about it but they were pretty easy to find in the junkyards last time I was going regularly (4 or 5 years ago). Park Avenues seemed to have the option frequently. Most GMs have two horns so if there are four, it has the option.

Or, here are sets on ebay

You are too kind, Paul. Actually I'm looking for one that says " Hey Oblivian, put that cell phone down and get the h^ll out of my way!"

Perry and chrisser, you've got some doozers there. Even one that plays Dixie like in the Dukes of Hazard. JD would love that.

Justin, Somewhere I have half of the original ahooga horn from my '32 5-window, but the back end cover got lost about 70 years ago. Shouldn't have let my mom clean out the garage I guess.

Chuck, I like the Wolo Bad Boy. Even found it on Amazon for about 25% less than at HF. With free freight I won't even have to break quarantine to get it in two days.

Tom,

The one I have was given to me by my next door neighbor. He thinks it was a HF unit but bought it so long ago he isn't sure. It's a 2 horn air that sounds like a Ferrari horn. Plus it's loud. Easy install.

If you want to hear it I can do a quick video with sound.

Cheers!

New (ah)ooga horns are cheap.

For what it's worth, the Wolo Bad Boy seems to be a Chinese knock-off of the Italian made Stebel Nautilus, which I have seen noted as being less prone to failure for not much more money.

Horns like the Hella Sharptone and Supertone are popular in some circles.

If it matters too: The 'ooga' horns draw ~20A, the Nautilus (and copies) draw ~18A, and the Hella's ~12A (per pair).

A bit more on horn sounds:

Might want to keep in mind noise regulations, both local and State. Several states have prohibitions on excessively loud or "Harsh" horns. In my Truck driving days, one of the drivers in our fleet decided his trucks factory air horns were inadequate, and fitted a set of those "Train Horns" to his Peterbilt. Got a ticket a few weeks later! I believe the Klaxons frequently fall under the "Harsh" category in many jurisdictions.

That is another good reason to live in the sticks. If some folks worry about horns, which serve a serious safety function, why can't we get rid of those f'ing noisy leaf blowers.

I'm only jumping onto this old thread to add to the recommendations for the Wolo Bad Boy horn... I LOVE it! There's nothing polite about it... when you need to be noticed it's can't-ignore loud.. just what I needed for my low, tiny, maybe they can't see me build..

The perfect horn for when your safety comes down to getting someone's attention

Years ago I would go to the local junk yard a harvest the air horns and
compressor from a Fiat 850 or 124. Add a relay to make them work better.
