Totally cool project. I'll be following this one with interest. Just to put my $.02 worth in (about what it's worth), I vote for the beam front axle just to keep the classic look. The street rod community can offer you lots of choice in making it work. Good Luck! :cheers:

I do like the look of the axle out front a lot. I've been messing with some CAD drawings and I think it might be the only way to go with this car since the nose is so skinny.


I was trying to see if you could do a beam axle with inboard coilovers off of a cantilevered 4 link system. I think it's possible but it's fairly complicated and I'm not sure I understand what I'm doing enough to attempt it.

Then looking at typical locost style control arms. The axle line is high because of the tall tires, the car is low, and the control arms would have to be really long. I think it could work but it may look and perform bad.

So back to beam axle with leafs? Do they use shocks at all?

Missed the question. Yes, dampers are used with transverse leaf springs. Some opt to leave them off and rely on the friction between the leafs but there does need to be much friction between them. Oems have been fitting nylon buttons on the ends and they sell liners since it can be difficult to drill a spring to fit buttons.

Knee or lever dampers are also used (like an old mg) and friction dampers are used too but they wear out quicker than hydraulic.

With all the changes, I don't know why you need to use anything off this. Usually easier to start from scratch than restore.

You are absolutely right. I saw it for sale and I had to make a fast decision on it since I was leaving the country for vacation the next day. Once I got time to look closely I realized there's not much there that I actually want to use. It was cheap because the previous owner cut it up planning to put a motorcycle engine in the front. He cut the floor out, and also cut the permanent half of the hood out. The car now sags in the middle. It could potentially be fixed but it's not worth it for me.

Sorry if it was confusing, It's confusing for me too. I'm trying to identify what I want in the end, rather than working on projects only because I would feel bad if I lost money on them.
