Early Spitfire front shocks had a groove in the body for collets....like on an an engine valve.. for the coilover spring seat to rest upon.I have rolled a groove into older shocks to convert them to coilover ....Would there be any problem doing this to the gas pressure shocks available today? I know that monotube shocks may not like it ,but cutaways of cheapo style shocks look like they would ... |

A cutaway of the shock you want to roll would be nice to see, but I think you would most likely be fine on a twin tube as long as you did not impinge on the inside tube. The only worry would be blocking oil pathways. The gas sits on top, so you dont have to worry about that. Good Luck though!!! |

There are a couple of web sites out where where guys did exactly that; one used a roller tool in a lathe, the other used a modified pipe cutter. |

I did it with a big ol' manual pipe cutter thingy that you tightened, rolled it around, tightened it some more, rolled it some more. I did 4 of them in about a day - yes it took that long and I was sore for a week - and the nice thing about it was that it left a smooth edge and a very nice bevel for welding. |
