Like most things in suspension, it's not as simple as that and it ends up being a compromise of lower shock mount location and shock inclination.

Let's say the spring is angled 30 degrees at static ride height, as the suspension cycles the angle of the spring will change and, therefore, the spring and wheel rates will also. If the spring is at 45 degrees under full bump then the spring rate will go from 75% to 50% giving a falling rate which is about the opposite one would want.

Herb Adams in his book Chassis Engineering goes into this quite a bit and even gives formulas for calculating the leverage ratio of the lower shock mount and lower ball joint.

I think this is one of the main reasons that open wheel designers use pushrod suspension and put the lower joint of the pushrod as close to the lower balljoint as possible ... no compromise required.
