I just wondered if anyone your side of the pond had considered/used an Alfa boxer engine/transaxle in a build. Its all pointing the right way with matching trans , a very spirited little lightweight engine that revs and drives way better than HP figures would suggest, inboard brakes .

Were they ever imported to the States in any significant numbers? I've never actually seen an Alfasud car. Heard of them, familiar with the name! I grew up in Los Angeles where you could see any number of interesting cars, but never one of these. That IS a very interesting looking power package, though!

They were a very cool little car, but they have a staggering rust problem. New cars would be showing rust after a year. I think the story was they used cheap imported Russian steel that was re-cycled and had rust in-bedded. I also have never seen one in the US.

I think that most of Alfa Romeo was missing from the US market for many years? 95-14 according to this article:

Its a shame they were never imported to the US, these really are a great little engine and trans.

Early Alfa boxer engines were SOHC

And the later Alfa 33`s had the DOHC engine.

I think that engine/trans looks a lot like the current Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS?

And yes, I'm wondering... will this be like the S2000 and generally too expensive for good donor use? Or will it be more like the Miata, with lots of 'em reasonably priced and a great aftermarket ecosystem?

The Alfa looks good for midship use but the BRZ/FRS unit looks only useable for front engine? The boxer looks harder to fit for front engine use.

The Alfa transmission looks huge & heavy.

Not really- scale is small on the whole thing.

Flat 4's make a little sense for midi's, less for FWD, and none for RWD. Two heads, two exhaust manifolds, a yards-long timing chain, inherent exhaust system problems... terrible idea. Waste of money that comes out of the rest of the car to meet sales target.

When Cobb or Bruschur or someone who did Mits and Sub aftermarket they were finding more lag and 8-12% less HP depending on level of build, due to the heat loss and circuitous exhaust routing loosing motion energy.
