EBay Steering rack find

Post by gtivr4 »

Seems like a pretty good deal, but I'm not sure if a 18.25" rack would work well in a 442 chasis...

Apppleton Rack 10 tooth 2.5 turn

(they have 4 or 5 of them)

Thanks for the heads-up.

I saw those this morning. Not a bad deal and it seems there are quite a few available. The only thing is the tapered ends. Although, it would allow you to use actual tierod ends instead of heim joints.
Build sold to a new loving home. May start another one when I have more time to devote to it. For now I play with my boat, Datsun 240Z, and GS700 motorcycle.

Perfect. I offered the seller $125, and he accepted. Even if this doesn't quite work I'll still be able to put it on EBay and make back most, if not all, of the cost.

This is the first piece of my car that I've actually purchased. And so it begins...

Thanks!

Hmmm... maybe I should lowball him more (say $100). Nothing to lose!

Go for it. There's a guy who's placed an offer on one of the other auctions that hasn't been accepted yet...

Yup, that's me. I offered 125 as well, but he may not like me as much as you....

Man, I should watch it when I open my mouth. That's the second time I've mentioned someone buying or selling on the internet that turned out to be a locoster! :D

Maybe he's not approving your offer because you have a lower feedback count? The last rack's auction is going for over $125 now.

Based on my research, the only difference between a power rack (minus the power) and a manual is that they use different pinions. New manual pinions are about $50.

He accepted. My feedback is excellent!

From what I understand a power rack can be made manual by removing some o rings by the pinion gear shaft (about where the hoses hook up to it).

I called Appleton and looked on their web site and got a few details:

Width: 18.25"
Ratio: 2.5" per turn (I think the Miata rack is approx. 2" per turn)
Total rack travel : 4.25"
Weight: 17 lbs.

To change the steering ratio on an Appleton rack, you have to change the pinion AND the housing. Not ideal...

I still think it'll work. We'll just see.
