As far as DOT certifications are concerned, if the belts don't specify on their labels that they have DOT certification (along with the appropriate DOT code numbers), then they aren't. It's not likely that any motor vehicle inspector is going to allow non-DOT certified belts for use on a street vehicle, regardless of any overkill factor.

I'll be getting a 6-point set for my car, with removable clip attachments, for track use. But for street use, I'll be putting in removable DOT-certified lap-and-harness 3-point belts. The cost of a ticket (here, anyway) for non-compliant belts is as much as an SFI belt, so this all makes sense. Plus, you can reach all your controls, adjust your mirrors, etc. without unbuckling. And, it wouldn't be likely you'd get the car successfully certified as road legal without them in the first place...at least not here.

Your results may vary. Close cover before striking.

I have E code belts in my car, 3 point belt with a lap belt and 2 shoulder belts with a retractor behind my head.
They passed my inspection, especially when I pointed out that my VW Passat from Germany also has E code belts, E headlights and tail lights and numourous other E code components.
I realize that VW and others probably go for a special certification when importing the vehicles, but if my belts are from the rear jump seats of an imported 2010 Land Rover, then logically they should be fine for my car.
I could be wrong but I think even Japan is currently going through the process of dropping the DOT certification and swapping their vehicles over to the European E code certification.

I would think that any road-legal certification would be acceptable. I just don't think that the race-only belts will have such a certification. While I was a government-certified motor vehicle inspector (among my other duties, before I retired), I would have accepted E-code equipment as well...because I would have known it was tested & certified (somewhere, at least) for road use. I agree - the E-code stuff is becoming more common, and eventually it will be accepted as the equivalent of DOT certified.

Those are 5-point belts.

I have the generic 5-point cam locks from e-Bay at about 1/2 that price, I think. I figured I could always get rid of them if I didn't trust them after seeing them. They seem to be well made and are pretty firm in the latching process. I do trust them. They are a bit of an issue for passengers as they are not the easiest to adjust and readjust. Mine came with the bolt-down fittings on the ends but cut them all off in favor of the wrapped mounting method. Don't be tempted to use just the 4 belts, like I was. The crotch belt is really needed to keep the lap belt from riding too high into your abdomen.

Do you have any picks on how you turned them into a wrap around? Did you use a different end instead of the bolt on?

Evo,

My recollection is rather poor and it seems that I don't have a photo showing the original set as received. I just cut off the end of the belt near the bolt-on fitting with a razor blade and then heat-sealed the belt end with a flame. I used the 3-bar adjustment fitting which was with set for the wrap. This is the same setup as if the harness Bar was the fitting itself and as recommended for the std wrap around mounting setup. The problem was that you couldn't unthread the strap from the bolt on fitting due to the way they folded and stitched the end of the belt. The only photo I have doesn't show the final wrap-around and tuck for the tail of the belt. The excess length I just rolled and tucked behind the seat. For the lap belt ends, I did the same except was a bit more carefull in cutting the lengths so there wasn't an excxess laying in my lap.

Hope this helps.

here's another solution for those looking for something that is DOT approved and a race harness.

http://www.schrothracing.com/store/Tuni ... e/rallye-4

the Schroth Profi II also talks about being street legal but doesn't seem to specifically carry a DOT approval... the Specs don't indicate as much at least.

the Schroth ASM technology is pretty amazing, and i'd trust my life to it to be honest.

sorry for the threadjack, but thought someone might be interested to see that there is a DOT approved racing harness out there.

I believe the Rallye 4 was what I originally ordered due to the DOT certification and it didn't work with a typical Locost frame. The shoulder belts had a long section between the buckle and the ASM webbing cover and you couldn't get them tight unless you mounted them a foot or so behind the driver (pretty much impossible with a typical 7 configuration) or you packed on 200 lbs (would need a +8 chassis).

I ended up with Schroth harness part numbers 90361 and 90362 (driver and passenger side). According to Schroth they were designed for the At-om (IE a tube directly behind the seat) - they fit nicely and have really nice buckles. There isn't a DOT tag on them but they're the same spec as the DOT ones. They appear to be based on the Quick Fit Pro line.
