Looking back in the Lifestyle Section and cannot find that any type of GTG has happened in the Mid-Atlantic area. Mr. Hempys LLL is about as close as I can find. My apologies if it happened and I didn't find it.

So, after looking at the LoCost Builders Map I thought I'd put out a feeler to see if anyone was up for a low key, informal gathering in the near future? Fire up the Combi and if you bring it, I'll cook it!!

Lot's of nice drives to be had locally (Hanging Rock, Pilot Mountain, Blue Ridge Parkway...) and the weather should be tolerable for a good while yet. :D

So, is anyone interested in a GTG here in the Winston-Salem, NC area? :?: Might even get my co-workers to bring some of their toys too.. 65 GTO, wicked streetable Chevy Nova Drag Car, restored 65 Vette, 280Z Race Car, etc, etc..

Cheers!

KS

All I have to drive in such events right now is a rusty 98 VW Jetta.... but I'd love to do those drives! Might get 7/9 to join me too.

Botbasher, how far away are you from the the Tail of the Dragon? I go up there each year and that would be a great place to meet for some good driving.

It says just a shade over 4 hours (243 Miles). Yeah, that's on the list for first drives. Might be a bit far for a day trip though.. but I'm game!

Have to plan an overnight there. do you (or anyone) know when the bikers invade the place in the summer? Have to work around that for a overnight.

Great idea!

During the summer the bikers are there every weekend, if you are wanting to avoid bikers, then you have to go during the winter. Mon-Thur is not too bad, but you want to avoid the weekends.

Interested...but Ill Probably not make much of anything this year. Dragon would be very attractive...I've never been, and the wife causally wants to go.

It's not just about fighting bikes at Deal's Gap. They usually move quicker than the 4 wheeled traffic anyway.

http://www.tailofthedragon.com/calendar.html

Mini's on the Dragon was this past weekend, they had 772 cars registered to show up. I was going to go with them last year, but I thought about the parade run of over 500 Mini's there at once. That's a bit too crowded for my tic's. The Tail of the Dragon is only 11 miles long after all.

I just posted this last week in Media, Photography and Videos:

viewtopic.php?f=30&t=13614

Killboy.com also has great pictures of people driving the Dragon. If you've never checked his page out, it's worth a look.

It was my Locost's first real outing, and I took it to the Dragon on a Friday. There wasn't a terrible amount of traffic, but with the cops out and a 30 MPH speed limit, it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. We had fun, but it would be a great road back at 55 MPH where it once was. I think we enjoyed climbing the mountain on 165 and 143 better. Sweepers, to hairpins, up the mountain, then back down. That was a good drive.

So I would say if you are planning a trip to the Gap check the calendar first. Also what crisd said, go on a weekday.

Steve

Well, if Dragon is a better winter time event (for 4 wheelers!) then I'm up for suggestions. I've driven a few of the back roads around here. Haven't made it up to the Blue Ridge Hwy yet and although very pretty (from what I'm told) the 45mph speed limit and high patrol status does dampen things a bit.

I'm sure I can find something around here to make it worth the effort though. My biking buddy at work here is saying Route 8 up into VA is a twisty fun piece of pavement. I'll have to look into it. Tail is sounding more like a Fall/Winter weekend trip (at least from here).

Any other well known roads around here we could try for?? Open to ideas!

7/9 and I did the Blue Ridge Parkway in the rusting VW last fall, on the best day of fall leaf season. We did our bit in Virginia. The thing isn't supposed to be a driver's playground -- in fact, on this thing, either your drive or your look at the scenery; you can't do both. The 45 mph speed limit seemed optimistic on a lot of spots too.

IF you're wanting a beautiful drive where you can be a driver, I highly recommend VIR. That poor under-loved, under-used track is big and beautiful.

Tim

I've been talking to some of the bike riders around the shop and have gotten some (their opinion) great drives that are fairly local (long day (lunch & dinner) drive).

So any takers? Geek... sounds like it just might be you, me and 7/9!!

Ask me next year. With some luck I will have the car together then.
