Beautiful! Great lookin' headers, too.

And it's #13, my favorite racing number. I guess the owner doesn't believe in "bad luck" either...

It's Alive! First smoke made on All Hallow's Eve.

Even with only a rough tune it runs smooth and sounds awesome. Video to follow.

Here's a couple of short videos of our Halloween treat. The first shows the initial engine start. Fluids were then topped up and more runs made. The motor is a SBC with highly modified Hilborn injection, distributorless ignition, all the "right" internal parts and a Gen 7 ECU. It runs incredibly smooth considering the low rotating mass and the "rough cut" initial settings on the ECU. It also sounds awesome. A really fantastic package!

Lovely shape. Thanks for the structural photos.

I noticed you've changed the valve covers. How do you vent crankcase pressure? If it isn't vented, it will blow out the gaskets.

Is the engine mounted with a plate or standard type mounts? If standard type, do you have a torque strap or do the headers take the load?

Did you make baffles for the mufflers or are the mufflers really "mufflers"?

I stopped by the shop where this is being built after work on Thursday (Thanks again Tom!) and have to say that this build is absolutely top notch. While I was of course immensely impressed by the craftsmanship in that beautiful aluminum body work, I was just as or more impressed with all the little details that have been executed on this car since its arrival or that are in the works. It's one of those things where everything is done so cleanly that you hardly notice most of it at first and then the longer you look the more things that start jumping out at your (or are pointed out to you) as being slightly 'odd' or 'different' looking...Like the PCV, or the MAP and IAC system, or the throttle actuation mechanism, and so on and so forth. But upon close examination are really just cleverly implemented solutions. Basically anything that seemed out of place was generally them simply being a step or two ahead of my thought process. It's almost a shame that so much of this cars beauty will be hidden away once it's finished. But that discreteness in the details is part of what will make this car so fantastic...Since little else about the car will have any problem drawing attention to itself.

Thanks, Miatav8. One of the goals was to make the engine look as clean/simple as possible. There is a lot of sophistication "hidden" inside.

The valve covers breathe through billet vents mounted on the valve covers' "Hilborn" sides and then via hoses to a combo breather/catch-can. The picture below shows the breather can and hoses but not the valve cover attachment points. Oil fill is via the tube with the yellow funnel stuck in it.

The engine is mounted via front and mid-plates which are tied directly to the chassis. There is also a support for the aft end of the tranny.

The "mufflers" are large diameter tubes with somewhat smaller, perforated tubes running full-length inside. No damping material at this point. They are suprisingly effective with a nice deep sound.

Thanks, Justin. All involved are really pleased with the progress to date. We're all just anxious to get it on the road!

It was still a little damp out, but here are the videos of my friend's Scarab's first runs around the parking lot yesterday:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH8xzwGk0dM&feature=plcp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPR9cjPsuQI&feature=plcp

Tune up, alignment, setting chassis height, and many, many details still to be done.

BTW, if you like the sound of the "mufflers" in the prior video, the inserts are called "Powersticks" and are manufactured by Classic Chambered Exhaust (website: http://www.classicchambered.com/ )
Of course the straight pipes sound pretty good, too 8)

Thanks for the link to the baffles. I guess it is basically a 60s style chambered muffler like what came on my 67 mustang (two longitudinal with a transverse at the rear axle). It would be interesting to see a cfm/db test comparison with something like a dynomax or some of walkers small round tube types. How did you secure the mufflers inside the side pipes?

What are the cam specs? Roller? Hydraulic flat tappet? It sounds like 292-300 duration on a flat tappet with 350 cid with "traditional" amounts of lift.

Time for an update on the Scarab Project. Here's a "partially dressed" walkaround video as she was being prepped for the dyno runs.

Miatav8, sorry I missed your questions first time around. The headers and side pipes have since been completely redone in stainless and the Powerstick "mufflers" are now wrapped in fiberglass batting. The Powerstick ends were expanded for a snug fit inside the 3 1/2" side pipes and then plug welded in place on the hidden side. The cam is a hydraulic roller with a "modest" profile. Displacement is 377 cu in.

So on to the dyno runs:

followed by some more tuning:

She has a very nice, fat torque curve. Plenty for those vintage style tires.

Getting close....

A couple more pics below.
