Quick question, I'm going to replace the oxygen sensors on my 5.0. One appears to be this style (has a body and non-vented sensor):

while the other looks similar to this (no body and vented sensor):

While searching for stock replacements, both styles also seem to come up. Is there a difference between the two, do I need one of each, is one better than the other?

No difference in performance between the two styles. Skinny style is NTK and fat one is Bosch(?). Just different designs.

I have. The issue wasn't finding them it was the two different styles that was confusing me, and the fact my car currently has one of each.

If you search for "NTK vs. Bosch Oxygen Sensor", you can find a bunch of stuff. I'm not sure it was helpful though, sigh...

There were some posts that seem to think the Ford OEM ones were better than aftermarket, both Bosch I think.

Maybe keep buying two different sensors and let us know how you do?

Is it possible one is pre cat and one is post cat? Or are they both on the ex manifolds, just different make sensors?

They are both pre cat, a few inches off the manifold flange. It would seem that one is stock while the other was replaced.

Thanks for the help guys.

I find its the goofiest little things that hold me up the most. I'm still stuck on my O2 sensor issue. The motor is off a 1992 Cougar LX and is a 5.0 H.O. with pre-cat sensors right on the manifold, or so it seems. However, one sensor screws right in and fits perfect (passenger side) while the other does not as the holes are different sizes. Thread aside, one is about 11/16 (sensor fits like a glove) while the other is about 13/16 (threads don't even bite). Any thoughts? Am I attempting to install the O2 sensors in the wrong location, did I throw something away when I dismantled the car? I did a search, and the internet isn't terribly helpful for 1992 Cougars, imagine that....

It's been too long since I worked on 90s fords to remember much. This may be a silly question, but are you sure that car ran two pre-cat O2 sensors? Is the other port possibly for the AIR pump?

That's my best guess.

Cheers.

It's also possible that the second O2 further downstream on that side.

Thats a decent guess. Better than what I had anyways. Pretty sure it uses two pre-cat sensors, but haven't been able to verify.

Your engine harness should tell you. How many O2 connectors? Otherwise maybe hit up a Ford dealer and see if the parts guys can drag up an old diagram for you.

O2 sensor thread sizes are all the same from what I have seen so I doubt the larger threads are an O2. Probably AIR.

Yo Trochu!
The 5.0 I have is out of a 1992 Lincoln LSC. It has two identical O2 sensors (one with a longer wire than the other). They fit very nicely in an 18mm "Spark Plug Anti-Fouling Adapter" available at most parts stores. You have to cut the bottom end off the anti-foul thingie and weld the upper part into the exhaust at whatever point the O2 sensors are supposed to be.

http://www.autozone.com/ignition-tune-up-and-routine-maintenance/spark-plug-non-fouler/dorman-spark-plug-non-fouler/720789_636223_13423/

I can't imagine why you'd have two different thread sizes on your donor's exhaust... Was one of the bungs part of an aftermarket replacement exhaust, and had a bushing to make it work with the Ford O2 sensors, but that bushing is now lost?

Other'n that, how the heck are ya?
