Can anyone recommend me a lightweight transaxle within a modest budget, starting a new build where the main objective is lightweight, i know most will say light means expensive but I want to explore my options, i been looking at porsche, audi and old vw bug as a possible solution but wanted to know if i miss any others.

Can't beat a stock VW for size and weight, power handling, not so much.

The Subie is lighter than the VW axle

Nah. I'd think more expensive is due to being more desirable, which in transmissions usually means stronger and if anything heavier. To me 'light' probably means weak, and 'affordable' likely means weak and/or functionally compromised...Although, maybe that's just the optimist in me.

That would probably be the FWD unit from 30 years ago.

Then what would be the weight of a current unit

Isn't a Subie trans made of glass?

Or are the "tuners" just doing bad things to them?

I got the idea it was lighter from any number of posts from various people who have put them side by side.

Keep in mind you will unbolt the rear drive portion and just use the front drive portion.

My vote is for the B5 A4/Passat driveline. 1.8T specifically.

What? That Audi trans will take twice what the Subaru trans will take. For a while they were selling kits to put the A4 driveline in the Subarus because of this.

I believe that the comment from KB58 was in reference to the original post mentioning using an old (air cooled) VW bug transaxle.
