Not a car project this time though.
My job changed to a remote position a few months ago. That got Wifey Dearest to thinking "Hmmm remote, that means anywhere right?" After a brief convo with my boss, it was confirmed, I can live and work from anywhere.

For the past couple of months we've been shopping for houses in Greensboro, NC. Wifey Dearest is from Greensboro and I'm from High Point. Most of our families are still there or very close by. We moved away just over 20 years ago in February 1998, now it's time to go home.

Earlier today an offer was accepted, so we're on to the next chapter.

Nice looking house, however looks like too much lawn mowing required. Also appears to have to have plenty of room for a large work shop/garage.

Congratulations!

No shop on property yet. I'm looking at the cost of adding something. Haven't come up with specs and dimension yet, but a shop will be required for my sanity.

Chuck, I never would have made this last move if I had known my office was closing. Thankfully I changed roles to remote instead of unemployed like so many others at this plant.

I don't know if this will be our forever home, but it's kind of the goal. There is life on one level, about 1/4 acre with a space for a small garden, some blueberry bushes, a grape arbor and a fruit tree or two; plus ample space for a work shop.

My advice? Build the shop FIRST, before the other stuff!! You know, just to make sure other stuff doesn't suddenly "take precedence"!! :D

Some of the other stuff has to take precedence. Going to have windows and bathroom fixtures replaced, and not sure about kitchen cabinets or flooring.

Yo, Tommy!
Congrats on the new gig, new house, new location! My Dad's family is from High Point. In some strange turn of events, my sister wound up living there after college, is still in the area. (I have a cousin in the house building/renovating business there, if ya ever need a hand with that shop building...)

Keep us posted on your progress...

JD,
I'll definitely take you up on some contacts. I haven't lived here for 20 years and everyone I knew in the trades is old or retired.

Latest update on the house:
It got clean reports on termites, mold, and radon. The mechanical inspector found some cracks in the brick and water damage on the trim and siding. I'm not at all surprised about water damage to Masonite siding, but it does offer a negotiating point for later today.

I'm getting quotes on new windows and vinyl siding. Also looking at adding French doors out the back of the house onto a patio.
I figure if the siding is coming off, I "might as well" (See the might as wells happen in houses just like the do on cars) add the French doors and put a double window in the master bedroom. It's only a couple of hours work to reframe and make it a much nicer space.

The vinyl will also keep a paint brush out of my hands down the road which gives me more time for fun stuff.

We were hoping to close on the new house Yesterday. On Thursday we had everything on our end done, a HUD settlement statement in our hands, and money wired to the escrow account...

We were packing to head to NC when the phone rang; it was our realtor.
"Ummmmm, are you sitting down? The seller decided today he wants to make this a 1031 like kind exchange, but he hasn't done any of the paperwork or hired a facilitator."

FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--- you know the rest.

SO closing could be delayed for up to 2 weeks before he's in breach of contract.
Meanwhile I miss out on BOTH the Memorial Monster Time Trial (didn't register because we had a closing scheduled)
AND a 3 day weekend to start the remodel on the new house.

:BH:

Morons, dealing with morons.

Sitting at my desk yesterday morning about 11;15 am and the phone rings. It's the closing attorney who says, "I just got the 1031 paperwork from the seller. If you can get here by 5 we can close today."

20 minutes later Wifey Dearest and I had thrown clothes, tools, and the cat in the car and were rolling North.

4PM we walk into the attorneys office, sign 2 pieces of paper and we own a house in North Carolina.

Today, day 1 working on the new house.
Wake up and get a biscuit and coffee at Biscuitville before heading to Lowe's.

Get to Lowe's and pick out a new front door. It's a pretty craftsman / mission style with a 6 pane top section. Grab some shims, window and door foam in a can, some caulk, and ask WD - "Do you want a new handle and lockset, or re-use what's on the house now?"

WD - "just get the door, the knob and deadbolt will be fine."

Off we go to the new place for some demolition. About 45 minutes and I have the storm door off, pins pulled from the door, and the frame pried out back to the rough opening. About that time one of our good friends shows up to look at the house.
Quick visit was about an hour lost Great conversation and visiting, but not much work done.

Go to set the door and notice that I really need to put down a sill plate to clse the gap between the bottom of the threshold and the bricks... Back to lowes...

Put the door in, take the door out, put the door in, take the door out... Finally get happy with the gaps and fitment, then take the door out and caulk everything, put the door in...

Wifey Dearest looks at the door and loves it. Says... "you now, a new door knob and lock would look nice."
:BH:

Bug out and get some chow, then back to Lowes.
Pick out a WAAAAY COOL lock set and door handle, then back to the house again.

Install door knob and deadbolt, close door and deadbolt won't go into the striker plate.
WTF???? :?

Take the screws out of the striker side of the frame, close the door and the dead bolt works. Notice the screws had raised the right side of the frame about 1/8" when I ran them in, so predrilled 3 new holes, shot screws in and the door is happy. Caoulked the old holes up.

Wifey Dearest is happy, and all is right with the world.

1 job done 9,999,999 to go...
