Sitting at my desk yesterday morning about 11;15 am and the phone rings. It's the closing attorney who says, "I just got the 1031 paperwork from the seller. If you can get here by 5 we can close today."
20 minutes later Wifey Dearest and I had thrown clothes, tools, and the cat in the car and were rolling North.
4PM we walk into the attorneys office, sign 2 pieces of paper and we own a house in North Carolina.
Today, day 1 working on the new house.
Wake up and get a biscuit and coffee at Biscuitville before heading to Lowe's.
Get to Lowe's and pick out a new front door. It's a pretty craftsman / mission style with a 6 pane top section. Grab some shims, window and door foam in a can, some caulk, and ask WD - "Do you want a new handle and lockset, or re-use what's on the house now?"
WD - "just get the door, the knob and deadbolt will be fine."
Off we go to the new place for some demolition. About 45 minutes and I have the storm door off, pins pulled from the door, and the frame pried out back to the rough opening. About that time one of our good friends shows up to look at the house.
Quick visit was about an hour lost Great conversation and visiting, but not much work done.
Go to set the door and notice that I really need to put down a sill plate to clse the gap between the bottom of the threshold and the bricks... Back to lowes...
Put the door in, take the door out, put the door in, take the door out... Finally get happy with the gaps and fitment, then take the door out and caulk everything, put the door in...
Wifey Dearest looks at the door and loves it. Says... "you now, a new door knob and lock would look nice."
Bug out and get some chow, then back to Lowes.
Pick out a WAAAAY COOL lock set and door handle, then back to the house again.
Install door knob and deadbolt, close door and deadbolt won't go into the striker plate.
WTF????
Take the screws out of the striker side of the frame, close the door and the dead bolt works. Notice the screws had raised the right side of the frame about 1/8" when I ran them in, so predrilled 3 new holes, shot screws in and the door is happy. Caoulked the old holes up.
Wifey Dearest is happy, and all is right with the world.
1 job done 9,999,999 to go...
