So it looks to me like the W58 trans with the (W55? 22r) bell housing with the program mentioned earlier in this thread. So this would give us a nice light weight engine and a light trans(75lbs) that would handle it.

Picked this up the other day for my pile of parts. I got one of these to bolt the 1.8T engine to the T5 trans. http://www.jegs.com/i/Quick-Time-Bellho ... 2/10002/-1

On my first seven build I have a Samurai transmission mated to a VW 1.9 L. I rebuilt the engine and I bought a Suzuki transmission adaptor from ACME that provides parts to Suzuki Samy owners who want to convert their rig to VW engines. It was not terribly expensive and the mods were quite simple. On the road the VW- Samy performed to my satisfaction.

RWD has been a big topic on the Hardcore VW page and all the options have been discussed for drag racing options. I was talking about the toyota to VW drawings that are floating around and mentioned that I was skeptical that they would work properly. One of the guys on the page happens to be a machinist and he has a toyota that he converted using those drawings. He has been driving it for four years without issue, so it must be legit.

Would those plans work for the 2.0 as well or just the 1.8? From what i've read the main difference between the 2.0 and 1.8 is the longer piston stroke of the 2.0. I am looking at using a 2.0t and have read articles that make me think they should be the same, however any information would be appreciated.

Also are the adapter plans for the diesel 1.8 or 1.9?

On my first seven I have bolted a 1.9 TD VW diesel to a 1991 Samurai transmission through an adaptor sold by ACME. The cost was about $400, IMO affordable. So I did not think of making one. In addition ACME was selling I think as part of the kit a modified samurai flywheel
to meet the VW crank bolt pattern. Later, I discarted the 1.9 TD and built a 2.0 VW from a jetta which bolted without problem. I believe that my 2.0 mill cranks out about 120 hp with a special cam. The VW is a good SOHC engine, the Samurai 5 speed transmission is light ( about 55 lbs) and rugged:)
