In case anyone needs a wiper motor idea. I picked up a Ongaro 12v wiper motor made for a boat. Its self parking when wired correctly and has several sweep angles that can be set. Im pretty happy with it. Hodges Marine had the best price, i also got the Ongaro wiper arm to go with it.

Video of it in action.

Nice tip!

Just a week or two ago I found myself looking for a single wiper, 90-degree-ish wiper application for my still-in-parts-gathering-mode project. I noticed that the rear wiper on older Prius' (Prii?) looked like it might work. I ended up getting a Prius rear wiper motor off of ebay for US$17...SHIPPED! Hopefully this weekend I'll get a chance to figure out if it actually works and how I'm going to control it. Again, considering I haven't even started my frame, I'm definitely putting the cart before the horse but it feels like progress.

Also, speaking of wipers, be sure to check out the latest episode (18) of Project Binky for some incredible nerd-ing out on wipers. Spoiler Alert: there is math! (maths for you Brits)

It looks like a nice unit. I see the controller to sync 1-3 motors is an extra $140. I wonder if you really need it?

Did they send you an installation diagram? I'm curious as to how you could mount it. I was planning on using the somewhat standard MGB unit. It seem to work fine, but you need to route the common cable, which is a little awkward. Just running electrical wires instead is a benefit, but you have 2 motors instead of 1 as with the MGB unit.

Could you post a scan of any layout/installation drawings they provided with it?

Thanks,

A suv/wagon rear wiper unit probably would work just as well. I guess i didnt consider tehm since fronts just go round and round and most rears sweep like 150 degrees or so.

Heres the diagram, came with a little template. I just drill hole through tube under glass and screw the other side down with a tek screw. Its secure, only downside was i had to trim dash to clear the housing.

Thanks for this thread
I went for a different type referred to as boat wiper motor, available everywhere. It has self parking and a 80 to 110 deg sweep.

A sync would be needed for use of two wipers where they could contact each other at full sweep toward each other. If run long enough, they will hit if not sync'd.

Where a wiper is being installed for the purpose of inspection, there is also a percentage of the screen's area that must be swept by reg, if they apply the rule. A single wiper even with 180 sweep may not cover enough of the area.

@phil

Two questions for you:

1) Is the adjustability of the shaft length they talk about the result of mounting it between the upper nut & washer and the lower, which both move on the threaded shaft?

2) What did you use as sealing piece for the penetration through the scuttle?

Cheers,

My unit features a long thread, rubber washers and two nuts. The idea seems to be that the shaft can stick out more or less as needed. I have not set up my motor yet so I cannot answer yor question(2) :)

Dont recall seeing that model. The ones I saw similar to it had a switch on back side to operate it and only supported an 11" blade.

For my purpose the criteria is very vague. I just need a wiper capable of clearing drivers view at a minimum swipes per minute which I can't remember. Minimum windshield height is 12"
