Rivets huh? Made me check again. So maybe mine isn't screwed originally. or maybe somebody did a VIN swap? I finally found the hidden stamping on the chassis today. It matches my VIN tag. I'm good to go.

I think that car has had a VIN swap. They could have gone to a little more effort to hide the welds.

Tommy, that is a reinforcement for mounting the front subframe to the chassis and is common on all earlier MGB's. This is where the VIN is stamped according to my searches. It is not simply a poorly welded-on, stamped plate. Pics of other cars show the stamped number on the same reinforcement. I guess later production, they stamped it in the floorboards, which as we all know, is oft times missing due to replaced floorboards.

JD, further research shows the VIN was indeed screwed to the inner RH fender well forward of the radiator panel. Just like mine is. I'm not sure when they changed to screws or mounting the VIN plate on the shut panel.

I am confident that this is a legally clean vehicle and not been VIN swapped.

Good deal. I never looked for the number on my B. It was different on Spridgets, but danged if I can remember where they hid it.

I received my MGB Bible, THE BOOK, Original MGB by Anders Clausager.

Clearly the VIN plates were attached via screws well into the early '70's.

Pick up my new-to-me parts car tomorrow. Parts will be available!

Interesting... Mine was a 1971 roadster, built in October of 70. VIN tag was riveted on. I researched it once, via Moss or somebody's "look up your VIN" chart. It checked out, color and all. I never saw one with screws, but ya know, I can't say I looked at EVERY MG so, there ya go...

The parts car made it home late yesterday afternoon. To say this was a barn find would be over stated. This didn't even make it to the barn, only 50 ft away. For the last 10-12 years, it sat under this tree. We had to evict some wasps before we could move it. And I did find one mouse carcus while cleaning it out last night. This one is definitely in worse shape than the 1st. However, the driver's side front fender looks to be in great shape. This one part alone is worth the price of the car. 5 windows are factory tint! Lots of usable stainless and aluminum body trim.

Lots of good parts to use and sell. I am time limited and hope to get rid of the left over parts and carcus in a couple of months.Gotta get the 1st GT in the garage for the neighbor's sake. I'm sure that some parts of value (to somebody) will have to go to the scrapper.

Based on the window sticker, it is now only about 10 miles from it's 1983 home.

My wife likes these Rostyle wheels over the LE wheels, so these will be restored. I pick up new stainless trim rings from a Craigslist seller in a few hours.

Open the checkbook and let the fun begin.

I just have to share. I hope nobody EVER does this.

I was cleaning out the parts car and ran across an old front u-joint which obviously had seen an in-service failure. I cannot imagine ANYONE driving this car up to the point of failure. It must have been quite an experieince.

Good lord that joint must have been squealing like a stuck pig. I've had three fail catastrophically in my career; once on a Dodge A-110 van, not too bad as the front shaft wasn't long enough to hit the ground; and once on a late model Mercury Colony Park wagon.... that one broke the tailshaft housing. Also had another one fail in a Ford Country Sedan wagon. I was able to put it back together with a new U-joint even with half of the retainer gone, and even drove that car from Lockhart Florida back to Lynchburg Virginia on that joint.... I've seen them with hose clamps holding the caps in, caps welded in, and one with a good dozen coat hangers wound through it to keep it together..... What's that squeaking noise.......

This project has now moved up the list to my next car project. And also to the non-traditional builds section. viewtopic.php?f=36&t=19643 Just in time, as the snow has started to fall.
