A while back I bought some LED lights from eBay. They're white LEDs mounted on a flexible backing, in a 5-meter roll with a peel-off adhesive back. They run on 12v. You can cut the roll to any length you want. The 15 foot roll with a transformer and plug connectors was less than $15. You can also buy just the LED roll for less than $10.

These things are bright enough that, rather than dink around with expensive LED-replacement bulbs, I'm just going to stick strips up inside the housings of dead shop lights. My wife wants me to stick some under the kitchen cabinets. And I'm going to run a strip along each side of the cargo area of my station wagon, and inside the shell of my pickup. And I'm sure I'll find other uses for them.

These things are like the Cheez-Whiz of lighting; they're absurd but useful. And they're also available to run on 5V or 12v, in different colors, and even with remote controls and programmable RGB colors. For white LEDs, they have both 3500K and 6000K colors. And some are waterproof, some not.

Have you tried any application in a vehicle yet? I'm assuming you'd just hook up to a fused, 12V wire and ground.

It'll be a while before I can get to it. And I'll probably need to wire up some kind of dimmer, when I unrolled a few feet from the reel and powered it up, it was bright enough to leave dazzle spots in my eyes.

The instructions say you can just cut it to any desired length and hook it to 12V.

The ends of the strip have pads that take a screw connector that comes with the wall wart. There are solder pads by each LED. The instructions say you can solder wires on any of the pads to light a strip, as long as you put one wire on + and one on -, anyway.

I haven't noticed extra screw connectors for sale anywhere yet.

Those things are great. I bought some and put them in my gun safe and on my handgun rack. I just used some old speaker wire and soldered directly to the strips, then used some old Deans connectors from RC cars to connect them to the transformer. I think I'm probably going to put some around the ceiling of the deck after we paint it in the spring. A guy I work with uses his canopy for camping, he's got a string down each side for interior lighting.

In many areas, 12V is "low voltage" wiring and not covered by building code. In some places, adding a cabinet, porch, or closet light might cost $1500 for permit, inspection, and having a licensed electrician do the wiring, but you can install 12V wiring yourself without any paperwork.

For Halloween, you could make your kids some Tron suits...

It can be cut at any length as long as it is between 3 leds and a resistor in order to work with the applied voltage. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

LED replacements for standard bulbs like 194, 1156, etc are cheap per led if you buy a bag of 10 or so.
