I just saw this video on the Homebuilt FB page and thought it might be of interest to some. Looks like an alternative to a DZUS fastener in many cases.

I'm not sure how to make a FB video display here so this is the link.

http://www.facebook.com/QuikLatchDistribution/videos/1924966354466775/UzpfSTEwMDAwMDUwNDM3ODI2ODoxMTUzOTk3MzE0NzY4MTI4/

Are there other good latch alternatives?

All kinds of neat latching hardware can be found here:

Fair warning: Prepare to spend a bunch of time browsing

I used latches like these for my hood. You twist the handle to pull the latches tight, then flip the handle down. Mine don't have the locking tab though. I don't remember where I got them from though, kinda wish I did.

A 95% chance that you got those latches at McMaster Carr.
I used that same type of latch.
McMaster-Carr P/N 1406A-46 Lift & Turn Draw latch, stainless steel $6.44 each
Price has surely gone up since my purchase.

I thought I'd found them at a Canadian supplier, but maybe not.

I'm sure there are lots of suppliers in Canada. It's a Southco latch, Just my normal 95% BS.

Marine Depot.com has some nice Stainless latches for a fair price. Not a huge selection, but you might luck out and find what you need. I did.

Those Quick Latches are very nice. However, at ~$27 each, they're not economical. They're another small reminder of why I don't own a race car.

@rx7locost
Thanks for that SouthCo reference, Chuck. I have an account at McMaster-Carr, but they don't carry everything - just close to it.

Quik-latches look alikes being sold on Fleabay for around $5 each ...from China. Make that 2 (inblack) for $3.39 + $0.99 shipping. Just got a pair and they ARE cool. Downside is don't be in a hurry. Took 3 seeks to get here. The link if any one cares:

I have a couple of "latch" things to share. A little late for you, Kristian, since your car is built already but maybe it'll be helpful for some folks that aren't so far along. (Or for you next one? )

The nose of the Slotus is held on by "Push Pins" like this:
Attachment:
Push Pin.jpg
Kind of a fuzzy picture, but you can see the push button under my thumb and the ball-catch near the base of the pin. You have to push the button to get the balls to release. The frame of the nose is 3/4-inch aluminum tubing with pieces that extend backwards a couple inches. Those pieces fit inside some 1-inch steel tube pieces welded on the upper corners of the frame. Drill the right size hole (that's the only tough part) and these pins will hold this "tube-within-a-tube" in place. Best I remember, they came from either McMaster or maybe Tractor Supply.

There are several attachment points for the rear deck/fenders, but the "Locost-est" ones are draw latches from Lowe's. (They can be had from lots of other places too.) Just your basic tool box latch. I think the thing that makes it a "tool box latch" is that it has provision for a padlock. I put some heavy wire (with Slotus Green insulation) in the padlock hole as a keeper Pretty simple, pretty cheap...

Hope that helps somebody...

Peace, Love and Latches-

Those are some good "low cost" ideas, JD.

A few months back there was an ad for another "1/4 turn" latch company trying to sell into the Dzus marketplace. I did not save their information. However, a motivated person could probably find them using search engines.

Cheers,

It's from a roll of clothesline wire I bought years ago. It's about used up... I even used some of it for a clothesline!
