I'm seeing donor potential here... 200 hp, 266 torques, and in a small lightweight package. Oh, and about 20 moving parts....

Kudos to whoever figures it out. Modern PHEV and EV stuff has reached an entirely new level of complexity (ignore the several hundred volts of DC.) I'll be anxious to see if it ever gets to the point where regular people can DIY with this stuff.

My understanding is that people indeed are doing resto-mods with this stuff, but the "kits" can go up to $10k plus batteries. Then again, what does an LS7 cost?

Why does this give me the urge to build something with an old flat-head, or even a Hit&Miss engine?

Okay, and like 100+ years ago, the problem is the batteries...

The Bold batteries disassembled... The battery tray is basically the entire bottom 8" of the car plus a chunk of the engine bay. Oh, and don't forget to wear your safety gloves and use special non-conductive tools...

Over 5000 pounds of batteries...

And the list price -- $15,734.29 – $262/kWh

Those kits are simple by modern EV and PHEV standards. Their controller is only 96 volts and everything short of the motor controller look to be air cooled - it is the electrical equivalent of carbs and points.

You're seeing batteries delivering 400 volts at full charge on production stuff. From just a safety standpoint, you are well into arc flash territory if something goes wrong. All of the electronics and the battery have liquid systems to maintain battery temperatures and all of it is CAN or LIN controlled.

Not saying it can't be done but it will either take meticulously swapping everything from the donor to the build and not upsetting anything or someone with a lot of proprietary knowledge and time. Also have to consider that most modules have to be flashed to the vehicle so if something does go wrong it will be difficult to get a new part working.

Yo-
On TWWTFM's Ford Fusion plug-in hybrid, the bundle of wires going to that big black box under the hood is waaaaa-aaaay bigger than the half-shafts going to the drive wheels... And there's cooling fans in the rear somewhere, near the big battery pack, that seem to run independently of anything else... Just sayin...

I love the car... But Gawd help anybody trying to work on it or use the drivetrain for a donor car.

The guy who bought my Skip Barber formula chassis is "planning" to go with a Nissan Leaf or Chevy Bolt donor for an autocross monster.
The side pods will house about 2000 lbs of batteries.

I think he has a long road ahead

So I got to see a battery "pack" for a Ford something or other yesterday. Assume it's just for a hybrid since (to my knowledge) Ford doesn't feature a full-on 'lectric car.

IT was about 3 feet by 4 feet, 8" thick, and so heavy that I couldn't budge it.

I asked about the price (it was at my local pick a part place) and was told that it wasn't for sale....

Here we go...

Parental controls via iPhone
Collision Avoidance
And of course, you gotta buy they batteries for it.

But it's a kid's cart, if the kid has helicopter parents.
