Some work on the nose section before it goes back on the car.

The headlight mounts are now a combo of OEM Berkeley bases cut down to support 5.75" headlight rings (mounts). The headlights themselves are semi-sealed H4 units that will house the bike's H4 headlight bulbs.

Fiberglass work starts in earnest.. In this first pic I'm filling some small, random holes around the grille opening, and also filling the holes for the OEM front bumpers.. more minor fiberglass repairs and mods on the way..

Fiberglass Fun... Areas of concern on the nose:

OEM bumper holes filled, random stress cracks here and there, top of fender cracks (OEM shock stress to the body), OEM USA headlight pods removed (small holes to fill), fill small holes for OEM windscreen, fill windscreen support bracket holes, fill dash gauge holes, fill small holes in hood 'channel', shave and fill OEM wiper blister mounts, fill OEM hood hinge mount holes, reglass door hinge mount areas to repair cracking, reglass where body mates to aluminum inner fenders..

fiberglass is a goopy, messy business, but it's kinda fun... mistakes are easy to fix, if not time consuming. I've been using an epoxy resin, but I'll switch over to polyester resin to use on future parts once this runs out.. this epoxy is very viscous and slow to wet out the glass..

Last few pics bring this up to date in real time.. not shown is the grinding back of the 'good' FG to taper and layer the new FG to bond to.. I'm getting closer to having the nose prepped to go back on as a 'solid' (read: not cracking and flimsy) piece that I can truly mount to the car..

The pic of the naked car just shows its mechanical state as of today... I should have it back under its own power soon..

I'd like to get this car up and running again to do more mechanical sorting, but once she's back on her feet, I'm thinking of setting the Berk aside for a month or so while I prep the 1800 for auction.. Not super sure I'm ready to let it go, but it's something I've been kicking around..

so while I prep the 1800 for auction...

WTF? Absolutely not. At least not before I get a ride in it.
Offer for lunch on me still stands.

ccrunner,
Great to see your progress, the car is going to be sweet when completed. You are building a second one right? For yourself?

I’m sorry that you are moving the 1800 on, it is a great looking car, I’m sure it will sell well. Please provide a link when you have it, at least to vicariously follow it.
Cheers,
Eric

If your using "chop strand matt", the binder is soluble in styrene based resins, ie polyester. They do make heavy build up mats that have the correct sizing/finish that is epoxy compatible. That alone will save you some frustration with wet out. Otherwise, have a heat gun nearby, and flash off your resin to reduce the viscosity and speed up the wet out.

Also, unreacted amines on the surface of epoxy laminates will inhibit the mekp catalyst in a polyester system. Had that happen a few times.

Keep up your progress, you really give er. This thing is tiny..

Is there enough space behind the dash to fender seam, that you could shape tubing reinforcements around the corners, and then lay up glass over it?

Tony.. WTF?! ..Surely a ride will happen  .. truth be told I'm not sure if I'm ready to let it go.. maybe... the soonest would be mid April this year; surely I'll have it over at C&C in AG before then..

Eric.. I will have a link when it's time for the 1800.. I'm a big fan of Bring A Trailer, so I will likely take it there.. For the Berk, yes, the plan has always been to build 2.. I already have a white 59 Berk body and donor VFR800, but I might change it up and build that car with a DCT VFR1200.. not sure yet.. At any rate, once this first Berk is up and in service, I think I'm going to wait a year or two before I start the next thing.. I've been building non stop for several years now, and I'm getting closer to retirement 9when I can REALLY get some build time in!), so I think maybe I'll ease up on the fab and go play with Berk #1 for awhile, and also do some offroad goofing around, then come back to the build table once I get bored of that. Berk #1 will still command a lot of my time for the next year or so (2021)..

On the Berk fiberglass.. yes, this first round of glasswork has had me using the 'heavy build' chop strand that's epoxy compatible, but I think it's overkill.. the epoxy is so thick, and the chop strand is some heavy duty stuff. I think I'll put it in the 'high stress' areas, and eventually switch over to some lighter chop strand and polyester resin for the easy work of filling holes and the like. At this point I think my plan is to just be sure I don't layer the polyester over this epoxy work.. I'll keep the types separate on the car..

As for those dash to fender seams, I might split those to aid in getting the nose piece on the car to better align with the punt section it mates to, and once it's all aligned and mocked together in place, then go in and glass things back together to get a better fit than what I have now.

And not a vintage car in sight...

My garage-widow long suffering wife is a saint. Truly the best person I've ever met, and this summer we will celebrate our 30th anniversary. My pet name for her is Princess, and it's funny because she certainly is not... she's the most down to earth, unassuming, low maintenance chick I know. She's a middle school teacher and I'd do anything for her. Despite what you might have heard about teachers slacking off during distance learning, I'm here to tell you it's taken a toll not only on the students, but on the teachers as well.. hell, on pretty much everybody I've met, no matter their vocation.

We needed a break, so she took it upon herself to plan out a belated Valentine's getaway to a place call "The Ragged Point Inn and Resort" in Ragged Point, CA. We're blessed in CA to have an amazing coastline, and this place is perched right up on the edge of it all.. It's a few hours north on Los Angeles, and a few hours south of Monterey- right in the middle.. Our highway 1 hugs the coast for many miles in this part of the state.. it's a beautiful drive.. (Incidentally part of highway 1 is closed this year because a recent storm/landslide took out a section of road south of Big Sur..).

Anyway, my sweetie wife told me no car stuff this weekend, because we were to go away together and alone.. no kids, no dog, no students, no parents, no coworkers.. just us and that scenery..

A good time- 10 out of 10 recommend

Good for you on the trip. I'm sure she was more than deserving of a nice break. And, yes, ++teachers++ They're super.

Cheers,

Sounds like a wonderful trip! Great pictures and great scenery. Congratulations on your 30th!

My wife and I used to love to take trips up the coast to Big Sur. One of our favorites was camping just off Nacimiento Road on a landing on the hill. Sadly I don’t remember any of the places we stayed 35+ years ago.

Thanks for sharing and thank you from being teachers!
Eric
