How did you determine that the pinto balljoints would fit the S10/Blazer knuckle? Do you have any dimensions on the pinto balljoints? :?:

How did I determine that, I brought the knuckle to the store, and tried it for a fit...

Any idea what these short threaded tubes are called by chassis shops? I've been searching online for the last 6 hours looking for a place that sells them, but I've had no luck. Most searches fall back to the weld-in threaded tube adapters, which isn't what I need.

Any ideas?

it is weld in, never heard of attaching it any other way, but if it makes you feel better I got a chance a few months back to look at a nascar car and this is the same part that they use to build their A arms, has to be at least somewhat strong.

No, I mean the threaded tube sections you are using for your heims. All of the ones I have seen slip into the tube ends and are then welded to the tube end itself. Those all require a much larger tube diameter in order to work.

The ones you got look like they are just threaded tubes and do not require additional tube in order to work. I need some of those in 5/8" and 7/8", but cant find them anywhere.

These are the only kinds I can find:

yeh they were just sitting on a shelf in the store. You can make your own if you know how to thread tube, but I'm not sur where they buy theirs, I'll look around while I'm at work tommorrow, i know ive seen it online before

those inserts are called: weldable tube ends

you're looking for: female threaded rod

you can get it from mc master carr, your local steel supply, or a race shop.

The largest size that I could find from McMaster Carr was 1/4"-20 threaded. That's smaller than the rod ends I had planned on using. Any specific sources you might be willing to divulge? Chassis Shop doesn't have it, and they typically have everything like this. I could just find some tube of the appropriate ID and OD and tap the tube, but if I can purchase the right thread size and pitch off the shelf, then it's all the better.

Another option would be to just get a link tube and chop it in half.

The aluminum and zinc-plated (I think) probably won't work, as I intend to weld them to mild steel tubes. The hex stuff could probably work, but I'd really like to find something like what derf used right off the shelf.

I still havent been able to find a source for the weldable threaded tubes for the rod ends. Have been looking for over a month now. None of my local race shops have seen anything like it.

As a last resort today, I went to a machine shop over lunch to get some threaded tubes made.. ended up being about $150 for 4 of them... labor isnt cheap. :(

Got four 5/8"-18 RHT ends in two 1" di x .200" x 3' sticks. I think it will work out a little better this way though, since these are for my rear lower arms, I can have my arm ends threaded without creating potential weaknesses by butt welding small peices.

What am I missing.. It looks like people gave you several sources for these things in this thread for less than $5 each.... Is there something wrong with those?

I'm looking for threaded DOM tube, not weld-in inserts.. they are different.

If you look at the parts that derf used, they are short sections of tube that are threaded internally and are steel, so they can be welded to your A-arms. With the tight clearances I have in my IRS bracketry, I cant use the weld-in bungs, since the tube typically must be quite a bit bigger than the threaded end, due to the extra material that must go inside the tube end. Larger tube would interfere with the travel of my lower A arm.

If you look at this pics of derf's arms:
Image

The little peices that the heims thread into.. thats what I needed. After looking for them for a month, I ended up having DOM tube machined with threaded ends to accept the heims, which will actually work better for me, but definitely wasnt the cheap route.
