Dodge

The Jeep/Dodge AX15 5-speed, the Jeep NV3550 5-speed and the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154 5-speed all share the same case to bellhousing bolt pattern.

Image
As such there are a number of possibilities that can be had when a 5-speed is desired:

94-95 Dakota 2.5L bellhousing: Connects R154 to any K car based 2.2L-2.5L L4 in a RWD application.

94-99 Dakota 3.9L V6 Bellhousing: Connects R154 to any 3.9L V6 and any 273/318/340/360 V8.

96-99 Dakota 2.5L bellhousing: Connects R154 to any Jeep 2.5L L4. Because of it's GM inherited bolt pattern, also works with any Buick FWD V6 and supercharged V6, any Chevrolet 2.8/3.1/3.4 V6, any Cadillac 4.1/4.5/4.9 V8 and with a minor modification, any Olds Aurora DOHC V8 and Cadillac DOHC Northstar V8.

88-99 Jeep 4.0L L6 bellhousing: Connects R154 to any AMC 290/304/343/360/390/401 V8 and any 72 and later 232 L6 and 258 L6.

01-03 Jeep Liberty 3.7L V6 bellhousing: Connects R154 to any 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8 and 5.7L Hemi V8.

R154 Ratio’s
1st 3.30:1
2nd 1.95:1
3rd 1.34:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.75:1
Rev 3.20:1

The R154 is a particularly robust transmission. It shares it's design with the AX15 but is built to a different spec. Not in the Tremec class, but better than a T5. It would work well in certain applications. The deciding factor to use something like this would probably be cost. Good used R154's can be had for about $300 and bellhousing for about $50. Converting to a hydraulic clutch would add a bit more expense but still, nowhere near the price of a Tremec. So, if you've got a 318 2 barrel in your daily driver, this might be for you. It should be pointed out that Australians LOVE these gearboxes for V8 conversions.

Here's a good list of GM engines w/identification numbers which should help anybody looking at an engine which was removed from an unidentified vehicle. It lists: MAKE AND YEAR, C.I.D. LITRE BORE CYL., DESCRIPTION, BLOCK CASTING NUMBER, HEAD CASTING NUMBER, and CRANK CASTING NUMBER.

a s2000 engine from honda is suposed to bolt to a rsx tranny.. so any 2,0 and 2.4 engine could bolt to an s2000 tranny for rwd.. so you can have between 160 and 300 hp with this transmission, a cheap 2.0 from base rsx to 2,4 bottom ans type s head... depending on budget on canada i found s2000 tranny from 600$ cdn and 2.0 liter base rsx emgine from 800$ with all injection wiring and ecu... king of cheap...

The 4g63 from the Talon/Laser/Eclipse will bolt up to the tranny from a Dodge D50/Mitsu Mighty Max pickup.

also Hyundai Pony and Stellar (for Canada) and Plymoth Arrow.

The old 70s Dodge Colts also have the Mitsu 4G32 motor and are rwd.

Nissan 240sx, KA24DE or KA24E heavy cast iron lump with large displacement and decent aftermarket support. Cheap as dirt to replace.

Kia Sportage (older models) have a poorly managed version of the Mazda FE3, which you could use the Mazda Miata trans for....

I'd also recommend a small list of highly viable JDM imports that will come with RWD trans.... Such as the Nissan Silvia SR20DET and the Toyota 4AG, many variants which could be used, like the 20valve for example, providing you can find or import the RWD trans. This is a very gray market thing though, due to emissions.

Also, Starion/Conquests have a RWD SOHC that eats head gaskets. Mighty Max/D50 used some other engines, including 4G64 SOHC. None of which have any potential close to even a non-turbo 4G63.

In Australia, there was also a SOHC 4G64 Starion, but good luck finding one to import ;)

Acording to Del Long, who runs a RSX powered 7 in Solo2 D Modified. The FWD RSX engine does NOT simply bolt up to the S2000 RWD transmission.

Also the S2000 rotates the "usual" way - most other Honda four cylinders rotate the other way so you'd end up with one forward gear and mulitple reverse gears. Not sure about the RSX engine though.

The Corvair is the only rwd vehicle that I can think of that rotates the same way as most Honda 4 bangers.

All of Honda's current engines rotate the usual direction (K series - RSX, Civic, etc., S2000 engine is just a RWD variant [F? series] of the same family). However, the widely availible and very popular old B series do rotate the wrong way.

GM

Global V6
These engines were designed to be as compact and as light as possible so they are a good fit for a locost. The Global V6's are used in midget race cars and marine racing, so theres plenty of support from the general to. The FWD engines have aluminum heads and the RWD have cast Iron, the FWD varients all make more power then the RWD versions. Any of the Global V6's can be mated to numerous transaxles, and can be mated to the T5, and T4 since they share the same bellhousing bolt pattern. (the T56 might also work, but no one has tried)
Theres also a DOHC version, and a VVT version. Lots of different versions of this engine to make a short list of, www.60degreev6.com has all the details for this engine as well as the others.

Pushrod
RWD- 2.8, 3.1, 3.4
FWD- 2.5 (only as a DIY) 2.8, 3.1, 3.1 Turbo, 3.4, 3.5

I'm new to Locost , however

All 60 deg GM V6's bolt to T5's?
According to that website this motor has been in production since 1980.
Seems like a great choice for a locost.
Am I missing something?

Its a little tall - need a hood scoupe. It is very light for a V6 though.

There is a zillion variations on the T5 - I'd stick to ones out of F-Bodies and S10s.

yes all 60 deg V6's can bolt to them, provided you pick up the correct bellhousing. Pushrod's aren't that tall, a lil mini scoupe makes them fit just fine. Theres also another site i forgot to mention that sells some parts to make the FWD versions more compact to if you want to use the stock narrow frame. Killerbv6.com If you're using the +4" frame there shouldn't be any real fitment issues though. They also sell the bellhousings for the FWD cars to mate to the T5, but you can find them in junkyards out of fbodies and S10's etc.
