A hand-written receipt is fine, but you have to make darn sure you previously checked out the VINs on the engine and tranny. It's not a problem for getting the SB100 number but it'll be the kiss of death at CHP inspection time. I'd imagine they'd confescate it and you might have some explaining to do if it's stolen...

Thanks...that's exactly the issue I was thinking about. Is there a convenient online site where one can enter an engine or trans number to see if it has been reported stolen?

http://www.carfax.com/ but note you have to pay to check X number of VINs. I'm cheap and was unhappy about it, but there's so much on the line it needs to be done. It's not too much, like $20 or so.

Thanks Kurt. I too am cheap, so will call the local DMV office to see if they offer a better deal if I bring the numbers in.

CA DMV offices and CHP substations are not consistent (caution: severe understatement!) Finding out where to go is very important, since everything has to happen on January 2d. Did anyone who went in early on January 2d miss out on a sequence number because all 500 had been taken? I worry about the randomness of who gets their call through to Sacramento.

I think everyone worries about it. Haven't heard yet of anyone getting skunked that showed up first thing on the first day, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

what about using JDM engines, such as the SR20DET? I imagine they still have a VIN number attached to them, but I am worried about the CHP inspection since it wasn't a US market engine. I haven't bought anything yet, but if it's going to be an issue, that will help narrow down my drivetrain choices.

Could I build it with one engine then swap it out for another?

Yesterday I tried to get my appointment for the Monday fourth but my local DMV office was booked up so my appointment is for the fifth, though I am going there on Monday and try. The clerk said the this year numbers were still available in June. We'll see!!

MYTF, Are you trying to get your sb100 on the fifth? If so I think you'll miss it. I've never heard of them being available after the first day. Definitely not in June. I would be waiting in line early on the first day they are open. I've seen a couple of people miss out because they were too late that morning. I was first in line, 4 am. That was 2008 though. You might want to ask another clerk or the supervisor.

I've heard the same rumor about the SB100s being much easier to get in 2009, but not from what I'd consider to be a reputable source. Still, California did get hit pretty hard economically in '09, I can see how it would be plausible. Especially since nobody would try to get one after the first day, since everybody knows that's impossible :)

I've also never heard from anyone who tried to get one and failed.

I am going to show up monday morning and wait with those with appointments and hope. I talked to two of the clerks and they appeared to be knowledgeable and helpful. We'll see.

I complete the posting of fees and used my receipts only, this step is critical in obtaining your sequence number... I am going to meet the DMV supervisor this week to have him / her verify my paperwork, then I may see some of you in line Jan 4th!

My car is only now becoming a roller, but I am less worried about the car construction than the DMV issues! :|

Well the close (NAPA) DMV has a reall A-hole :BH: for a supervisor!!! When aslked what they are doing to facilitate the early rush of SB100 I reccieved (a series) of flip answers, indicating that he (or "it" in this case) has no plans for anything special, and waill waite for Sacramento to provide guidance. Ya right... IF you were planning on going to NAPA DMV, I wish you luck and will bet my sequence number will be a LOT lower than yours IF you get one there. Scratch NAPA off the SB100 DMV places to wait!

Anyone care to share which CA DMV they are going to? :?:
