I started to put some parts together last weekend to see how this idea would feel and look like.

It is a reverse trike with Yamaha Vmax engine.
The front end is from an atv.
I am ready to start the frame.
I wanted to know what you guys think about it?

That is cool. I can see you are trying to get it as short as possible

It looks like it might be better to run the steeering rack pinion straight back, underneath the engine, with the rider a foot or so further back, placing your feet out of the suspension area. It should simplify the shift linkage too.

Is it rear wheel drive? How are you getting the power back there?

Looks like fun,

I just hope you don't hit something like a curb that is below your limited sight line and push that engine back a couple of inches. You won't be having any (more) kids then.

-I was planning to bring the steering shaft straight up in front of the engine and then through the intake manifold, there is some space there.

-The Vmax has a shaft drive transmission. I am just extending it adding a second shaft and two u-joints.

-carguy123, I thought about this and I will certainly reinforce the frame in the critical area so it stops the engine if anything bad should happen.

I stated to sketch today and I have some question
I am planing on a 50" front track and around 70" wheel base. What do you guys think?

I want to use 1" DOM tube. what kind of wall thickness do you recommend?

It might be too short and narrow to be stable. If the center of gravity is too far forward, or too high compared to the track, it can be a trip hazard.
Here's a link that explains it: http://www.rqriley.com/3-wheel.htm

Also, 70" wheelbase might be a bit on the twitchy side. Looks like a cool project. V-Max has a great sound. (plenty of power, too!)

The engine moving rearward isn't the real problem (assuming a decent frame). Seat belts stretch a bunch in an impact. Do a little research on the magnitude of stretch before you park that transmission against your crotch.

I'd suggest, though, as always, four wheels.

He's right, Thats why race drivers break their ankles/legs! I like it though!!
Its different!
What about a side by side? great weight dist, and it still could be little. (as a bonus if some one ever short stops on you...you could still have children some day. Just a thought.

I assume you'll be making a custom airbox that drops down the sides for better visibility.

This is slightly stretched to get the feet out of the suspension area, with some rear protection and raised seating for driveshaft clearance and better visibility.

Wow, great idea! Not sure the front engine is the way to go. Why not put the engine in the rear? I'm considering a trike with the engine out back using my KLR650 as the donor. I also have a 2005 KTM 950 V-twin that would make a great donor. The 950 is a bit too complex for my taste though. Classic German over-engineering! Yes, I know it's Austrian. Collaborators, same thing! An R1 would be perfect but has way too much power. The 650 engine would make it a good commuter. Almost 50hp can be made with the engine and a 703cc engine kit. The KTM aluminum swingarm and rear suspension would be awesome to use. The KTM has a WP PDS custom rear shock, Brembo rear brake caliper. I also have matching front Brembo brakes for the front of the trike. The 17" aluminum wheel from a 950 SM will fit the KTM swingarm. A car tire will fit it. Nice!

Honestly, I have too many projects right now to start another one! But it's cool to talk about. My next build is a BEC or a BET.

I love it and if you can size it right will be an awesome machine. Keep with the bike theme and I can just imagine a Sunday morning mountain blast on it sliding the rear out everywhere. The VMax as you probably know is just the ducks nuts for grunt, kills most sports bikes for roll on acceleration and sounds tuff. Good luck, keep us posted please!

The engine is about 250 lbs and a big person+ seat, and battery can be about 250 lbs. why not put the engine in back of the driver and you will have a shorter drive shaft and more room for the drivers feet. The driveshaft will be out of the way too.

If there is a fire or a hot oil leak the driver will not be in danger.
Don Gartlets already solved that problem.
