If you look at the entire drivetrain you should include the suspension and brakes too, since you need to be able to compare IRS to live axle. If you include suspension you need to include the frame since that was changed to accomodate the suspension...you see where I'm going with this? Final completed car weight is truely all that really matters, but the only way to make it lighter is through individual components or sub assemblies. Thus listings of individual component/sub assembly weights is extremely useful. Since the engine used does not necessarily dictate the transmission or rear end used, even if lack of suitable transmission or rear end availability may preclude a given engine, then the individual engine weight is still of primary importance when deciding what to use and is totally relevant to be discussed based on it's own merrits and not just with the rest of the drivetrain. If complete drivetrain weights are available, great lets throw them out there...If not lets keep throwing more individual engine weights out there as another source to help consolodate all the crazy information out there. Of course the more information known about the exact setup measured, the better.
With that said, let me get back on topic...One weight I do know for certain, as I helped weigh it after pulling from a formerly running car:
Complete running (just hook up 12V/fuel/radiator and start) carb'd Mazda 12A Rotary w/ oil + stock FW/Clutch + Transmission w/ fluid = ~375lbs
(For accuracy, note that this car has no PS or AC)

Visited a friend today for some Locost advice, and it transpired the engine on his bench was a Zetec from a Caterham.
He was kind enough to weigh it for me. It came in a pound or two shy of 270. That's complete with engine mounts, throttle bodies, aluminum flywheel, clutch, special Caterham oil pan, serpentine belt, alternator. No starter motor or headers.
I think he said they are coming in at around 170 - 185 HP. at the flywheel.

This just in: As weighed on a pair of "highly calibrated" bathroom scales...
Ford Duratec 3.0L V6 - Bare Engine (NO accessories, manifolds, etc): 270 lbs
Ford MTX75 FWD Transmission - With Quaife LSD and Starter: 110 lbs
...More complete weights to come.

Confirmed this on my 12A this past weekend. No exhaust manifold but configured the same as above (but w/o oil or tranny gear oil)= 361.5 lbs on a VERY accurate scale. As you can see the exhaust manifold is relatively heavy for such a light motor.

Re: Summary of engine weights
1988 Nissan VG30et 460lbs
No AC compressor
No PS pump
No AC bracket
No AC idler Pulley
Does include Torque converter and flexplate.
Full of Oil, and some antifreeze
full exhaust manifolds and Turbocharger
The scale shows over 500 lbs, but the scale was held upside down and took into account its own weight, which is 75 lbs. don't mind the mess in the garage

Wow, that's at least 100lbs less than I would've guessed. Was that the weight palletized? Were accessories were on the engine? Intake & exhaust manifolds, alternator, etc.? I know you said complete but that means different things to different people.

I can't believe it's complete. A Hayabusa engine/tranny is around 200 lbs!

Re: Summary of engine weights
While someone may have listed the "shipping weight" as such, it is obviously a typo of some sort...Considering that the Audi Quattro transaxle alone is well over 100 lbs, and I would guess closer to the 150 lb range, I'm going to throw the flag:i recently had a 1999 audi a4 1.8T entire engine with Quattro tranny shipped to me and the shipping weight was 281 pounds...
Feel free to weigh them yourself, and get back to us with your findings though.

were did you get those numbers from.. im talking about the tranny not the entire drivetrain from the tranny back to the rear...
The tranny weights from the service technical book i have says
AUDI A4 1997 1999 M.T., 1.8L, Quattro (code DJJ) 84.7lbs

Re: Summary of engine weights
So according to your book, the audi transaxle weighs little more than the good ol' fashioned T5 even though it additionally has a ring/pinion and 2 differentials housed within the transaxle case. The numbers I've seen from people who claim to have physically weighed them on the GT40 sites appear to put the older 2WD 5spds more in the 50-55 Kg (110-120 lb) range. http://www.gt40s.com/forum/gt40-tech-po ... htest.htmlstorx wrote:The tranny weights from the service technical book i have says

Even if my (admittedly) guesses based on other known transmission weights are as far off as your service book suggests, the "engine weight" would still be under 200 lbs...Which still draws the BS flag for anything close to a "complete" 1.8T.

Re: Summary of engine weights
If it only weighs 281 complete you should be able to toss it (just the complete engine or E&T) on a set of bathroom scales and snap a pic for us.

Perhaps that's what the manual says for transmission, do they list a weight for the complete transaxle assembly?
