Is there a way to make a default setting of NOT getting notification when a reply is posted?

Inevitably, sooner or later I forget to go down below the posting box and uncheck the box.

Now that I've learned about "View New Locost Posts" I don't need to cruise thru all the forums and therefore I don't need to be getting all the emails telling me there's a reply.

Also I just noticed that View New Locost Posts doesn't pick up ALL the new posts. For instance this post didn't register there and as I cruised thru the forum list I keep seeing new, old posts that never showed up in the View New Posts list.

I thought there was a setting for that under "User Control Panel", but now I can't find it.

Anyone have better eyes than me?

As for "View New..." That shows *new* posts, not *unread* posts. So if you hit that link at the start of every day (just like me!), you'll stay up to date. Also check out the "View Active Topics" link. It is similar, but goes back farther.

I also thought View New got all the new posts, but as I cruise thru the forums manually I find all kinds of unread posts that never made it to View New.

I have never found such a setting, but I'm hoping I've just missed it.

That's odd, I only get notifications for PMs and I haven't adjusted settings at all in my profile. I thought you only got notifications for threads you had subscribed to by clicking the linky in the upper left.

Look at the next post you make. Well actually scroll down and look below the posting box.

There's a series of check boxes down there off the page and out of sight

1) Disable BBCode
2) Disable smilies
3) Do not automatically parse URLs
4) Attach signature (signatures can be altered via the UCP)
5) Notify me when a reply is posted

#4 & #5 come automatically checked so you have to remember to scroll down and uncheck box #5 or you keep getting all the emails

#4 is for me, but not #5. Perhaps these just mirror your CP settings.

Try making a conscious decission to uncheck the "Notify me when a reply is posted" and see if it doesn't self correct.

I just did it with my siggy and it self corrected

Do you mean on every post? Cause that's what I've been doing and it doesn't "learn". I've not found any other place to uncheck it.

i went thru UCP again and under Board Preferences > Posting defaults I found something that looks like it might do it.

But when I edited this post it still had the Notify me when a reply is posted checked so maybe that doesn't do it.

Look in the user control panel under "board preferences" and "posting defaults." Also note the non Microsoft OS. Did you click "submit" after checking the other box? The software only honors the submissive, you must submit to its power.

It worked (I think), but only for future posts. All old posts still are notifying me.

I have switched to the view active topics, because when I used view new posts it only shows you the ones since your last vists, so if you don't read them all and then you leave and come back later it won't show them to you, view active topics shows you all the topics that have been started or replied to in the last week. Also I used to sometimes click on a topic and start reading, but not realize there were more new replies on the next page and the topic would still be marked as having unread posts, my computer at home and at work mark the threads differently in this case and one has to be refreshed to see it and the other doesn't. Either way view active topics works so much better for me since I don't have to worry about setting aside a big block of time to read all the new posts without worrying I'll miss something if I run out of time to read them all.

I've not been that lucky or is it unlucky? They stay as an unread post thru several vists to View New for me.

And I'm still getting notifications from posts even tho the Notify me box is unchecked. Apparently if you've EVER said to notify you then it will always notify you.

Nah, that'd be too easy!

I didn't think about that. Once I clear them out of the loop then we'll see if any more come back.
