Rusty,

I think Keith Tanner always ran his car without the cover. You might zap him an email about any problems.

Your car is SUH-WEEEEEEET !!!!!!!!! 8) :hail:

Rusty-
Seems to me like Ford Fiesta's and/or Festiva's ran open cam drives, and I'm pretty sure some Fiats did as well. The ones I'm remembering may have been "race cars" and not the street versions, however.

Sure would look cool! Paint the cam gears to match the car...

I recommend against it. Do you really want the first contact surface that the hood may touch to be your timing belt?
Besides, I think your car will look cool with a little power bulge 8)

Moti makes an excellent point regarding the hood contacting the cam belt. How about running the cam exposed, but with a lexan see-through power bulge? ooohhhh...visible moving parts !

I feel the same way... That's why I have a little "power bulge"

You've actually met a Festiva "race car?"
Bwahahahaha. That's a good one!

Maybe a SHOgun 8), but a Festiva!?...

Actually, my buddy James, who is helping with my Locost build, raced a Festiva or a Fiesta (I don't remember which one) in SCCA a few years ago.

If you think about it, it makes a good SCCA club racer:
1) Cheap
2) Available parts (at the time)
3) If ya wreck it, you ain't out much!

If it's still running around out back of his shop, I'll send ya a pic!

There's a small but real danger of having a small stone bounce into the cam gears and causing it to slip a tooth or two. At best it starts running funny, at worst it bends the valves and punches holes in the pistons...

The BP and B6 are non-interference motors, so that can't happen.

Hey Rusty-
Well, my memory kinda did deceive me about some/most of this discussion. The small, FWD race car James drove was a Fiesta.

The "open" cam drive I was remembering was not on that car, but on his other racer, a Pinto! (Yes, a Pinto... I'm not makin' this up!)
