Post subject: Solo II Nationals Results from D&E Mod. Many Locosts
PostPosted: Sat Sep 30, 2006 9:03 pm
Everyone on this list has seen videos of Lotus, Caterham, Westfield, and Locost autocrossing. Anyone that wants to get serious and go to the Solo II National Championships, here are the people you will have to outrun. You will notice that lots of Locost, Westfield, and Caterhams are in the mix along with some other cars. FWIW, this is the only USA form of racing that officially recognizes a Locost as a "make" of car. The Locost 7 clone is officially classed in D or E Modified, depending on the engine and weight. Here is a link to the Yahoo group for D & E Mod if you are interetsted:

and here are the results from this years Solo II National Championship:

Just for statistical amusement:

20 in 7's (or 7esque)
3 in Europa's
3 in Elan's
1 in Esprit
13 in non-Lotus

What's even funnier is that Del Long's (2nd Place E-Mod) car is a D-Mod car. He added 2 steel plates to the bottom of the car to ballast up to E-Mod weight, still running D-Mod HP. Iowa Region really cleaned up in D/E-Mod - 1 1st, 2 2nd's. :)

That 5th place car in Emod the Laminar Concepts Viking looks to me to be a locost derivative.

Del Long's Locost has a Honda K motor, that is NOT Locost at all.

Relatively speaking compared to other A, B, C, D, E Mod cars that were not 7 clones of one sort or another... they are Locost. I have heard that at least one of the A Mod cars has >$100K invested(???) in the car.

Autocrossing is a great sport in that it is mostly driver. Some people with low budget cars win. You don't have to spend lots on the car.

Going thrue the process of building my car for the track only. I have to agree that a lot of the parts are not Low-cost, but the labour is

In 2004, I met a gentlemen ( I don't remember his name) who had built a locost based on a Toyota GTS, it was not a high budget car, yet he was there competing and enjoying himself greathly.

These cars are not built in one day, but are a constant projects, they get work over every winter, Del's car has gone true several transformation over the years. This is the fun part about our "Locost", since we build them, we have a greater understanding of them. We can always improve the car or upgrade some components, the fact is: They are never finished.

I'm going back next year with the Civic, but in 2008 I plan on being there with my Locost in D-mod...
