So you payed just over 1.00/lb. About 12x scrap value. Interesting :D

You also payed about 1.75/hp. That really isn't to bad.

Well, then we'll just have to hope that's not what the engine ends up being.

Man that manifold is just itching for a turbo, if it isn't a turbo manifold already.

I just weighed the combo for my locost today. I am using a 3.0 Vulcan v6 from a Taurus, converted to run a big 2 barrel carb and duraspark ignition. My brother built the intake from 3/16" steel plate, so that could definately be put on a diet. The engine weighs 365 pounds, complete with flywheel, clutch, transmission adaptor plate, engine mounts, starter, carb and ignition, but no exhaust manifolds. The flywheel is a custom lightweight one (9lbs) and the clutch is from a Hyundai Stellar. It should make close to 200 hp at the flywheel with the big carb and headers. The transmission is a Mitsubishi KM119 from a Stellar and weighs 63 pounds with shifter. Both weights are empty of fluids, other than some water still in the engine.

This is something I seem to have to post everywhere. Because there are so many people who the that the LS1 is a light motor.
Well it's not.

As you can see. The LS1 weigh approx 536lbs. Without any exhaust manifolds. There are also no fluids in either transmission or engine.
The motor also has all accessories incl' A/C, along with wiring harness and PCM.

Wohoo finally pictures of an Ls1 on a scale. It seems the internets says a T56 is ~125lbs, so the LS1 in that condition would actually be 609-125 or 484lbs. Not to bad considering the power it produces.

Great pic!...And that revised by nocones 484 lb figure for the LS1 without the actual transmissions weight seems to jive pretty well with the 456 lb number for the less complete (but with exhaust manifolds) LSx pic of unknown validity I posted on the first page LS1. Definitely not "lightweight" by Locost standards, but still not too bad for what it is.

Thank you very much for this dose of reality. I also see posts of people thinking an LS1 weighs about 300 lbs - gets a bit annoying how people will cling to what they want to believe, facts or not.

Your welcome gents..

The internet also says the LS1 is something like 479 (or 497? What ever is listed on GM's site).

On the scale the front scale is weighing the LS at 536lbs and the rear scale carries 76 lbs. This concurs with what I've been told that the T-56 weighs in at around 80-90lbs.

Your scale setup does not weigh just the trans on the rear and just the engine on the front. You can not actually make any such assumptions. The only that information that this picture can tell us, is what the whole package weighs in that configuration. I think that you may be confusing weights you've heard for the T5, with the T56. The Tremec web site lists the T5 at 75 lbs, and the T56 at 115-130 lbs depending on application. This is pretty consistent with the information readily available from a variety of other sources. I believe the Tremec listed weights are dry weights...And I don't know if that is with or without bellhousing, but I'd guess without.

Hmm so a sr20det weighs 490lbs + intercooler= 220-450 hp. Aluminum head chevy 400 - 500hp easy with a 5speed tremec weighs 500? Doesn't make the chevy seem so big comparing it that way. Of course you would need a heavier diff. That might change my plans. Just happen to have 1.

this shows total package weight and that the weight cog between those two pickup points is biased towards the front. .. not much use given the amount of overhang.
place the right hand pickup at the front rail of the oil pan and you'll be able to calculate the longitudinal cog of the combination.

Just took a Chev 2.8 V6 to the recylcers

No flywheel or injector, exhausts and had waterpump and intake
no fluids, dist was off.

327 lbs.

The heavy alternator bracker and a few other things were off.

No wonder I couldn't shift the bugger
