i have just watched a segment on tv about a mercedes self driving car.

when they introduced self parking cars i wondered what would happen if it ran over a small child whilst parking?

well if a car drives itself, and is involved in an accident that a human would have seen before it happens such as an unsafe load on a truck infront, who is liable/

if the owner is, then there would be a case against him for any injury caused but that opens up litigation by the owner against the manufacturer and the person who sold the car, it doesn't stop there, what about a defect needing a recall being responsable for the accident in a self drive car, is the writer of the software liable?

many modern cars are recalled because of serious defects and to be honest, these cars are more and more complicated, if a self drive car stops in the middle of nowhere because it "thinks" it has a defect and the occupants are stranded in the middle of a desert and die who is responsable.

will a self drive car decide to go to the dealer if it thinks it has a defect or a recall and leave the owner stranded somewhere?

if the car uses google maps which can be very unrelyable in parts of the country and turns off the road and crashes because there isn't a road there but google maps says there is, who is then liable?

In the future all the cars are computer driven and go everywhere at at least 130 MPH. Often bumper to bumper because that's the safest and most economical way.

All the cars have a purple light on top of the dashboard with a switch under it labeled "expendable". That's always the car at the front of the 130 MPH trains of cars. People who turn on that switch get their cars for free.

I think that would work...

It's all payed for because under this new system cars don't need ABS anymore.

I'm afraid my daughter and son -in-law didn't help the cause. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5czTMwq0dF4

John, the answer to all of your liability questions is yes. Ask any lawyer.

I still think self-driving cars for the masses is at least 20 years away. Like drone deliveries, too many issues.

Self-driving cars are not new. In the '50s they were predicting wires under all of the roads that cars would follow automatically. I think they even built a section of road like that years ago, somewhere around Arizona.

No Officer! I'm not driving under the influence. The car is doing the driving. Honest!

So self driving cars automatically go places. It seems the first step will be cars that automatically stop going places. Makes sense. I want the purple light on the dash.
