I read this one today and realized it might be fun to have a puzzle section. I hope it takes off. Here is my first one.

Quote:
If you travel at a speed of 30mph in the 1st mile, how fast do you have to go in the second mile so you have an average speed of 60mph over the 2 mile stretch?

Feel free to comment and add your own puzzle.

Wouldn't that require infinity speed? Have to stop time

30mph/1st mile + xmph/2nd mile = 60mph average over 2 miles
30mph/1st mile + 90mph/2nd mile = 60mph average over 2 miles
(30/1)=30 + (90)=120/2 = 60

Don't know if that's right but all the figurin' looks impressive
Now I'll have another sundowner cause I can't get those 10 minutes back in my life

Perry that's the first number that popped into my head.

Then I spent a few minutes getting all wrapped up in averaging 60 mph over the 2mile distance.
2 miles @ 60 is 2 minutes
BUT 1 mile at 30 is also 2 minutes.
So covering the 2nd mile in 0 minutes takes infinity speed.

One of us is right... I think

Perry, nice try. That was my 1st answer too. However, start from the overall data. If one were to average 60 mph over 2 miles, it would take 2 minutes to drive to entire distance of 2 miles @ 1 mile per minute, right? Now, driving the first mile at 30 MPH would have taken 2 minutes. How fast would one have to drive the 2nd mile in the 0 minutes left? The problem is unsolvable.

Tommy nailed it, sort of. Well done!

I thought it was a good brain teaser that I had not seen before. Any others out there you want to share?

you have 2 petri dishes containing amoeba. One has 1, the other has 2 when you start the timer.

each amoeba divides every 3 minutes

the second petri dish that started with 2 amoeba fill to the brim in 6 hours.

How long does it take the dish that started with 1?

The reason this doesn't work is that it's a time based solution, where as the question is distance based. Time is the frame of reference to speed that people are most intuitively familiar with, so most people will inherently be drawn to thinking about it that way. But the units don't work out. That's the trick. Going 30mph and 90mph for the same time each is what will yield the 60mph average, but that means you'll also have to go 3 times the distance at 90 as you did at 30.

Three guests check into a hotel room. The manager says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the manager realizes the bill should only have been $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 as five one-dollar bills to return to the guests.

On the way to the guests' room to refund the money, the bellhop realizes that he cannot equally divide the five one-dollar bills among the three guests. As the guests are not aware of the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 back and keep $2 as a tip for himself, and proceeds to do so.

As each guest got $1 back, each guest only paid $9, bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop kept $2, which when added to the $27, comes to $29. So if the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?

$27 total paid, $25 bill, $2 tip.

The wording spins it around to focus you on the wrong thing.

Sorry I don't have a return puzzle.

This is an old one from my dear old dad:

Quote:
Brothers and sisters, have I none,
but this man's father
is my father's son.
Who am I?

No fair Googling the answer.
